Improbable and Vancouver, two terms that almost went hand in hand during that memorable Champions Cup run last year.

But after a tough reality check in the first leg last week, the Whitecaps head south of the border to take on the Seattle Sounders in match number two.

Down 3-0 from the home leg, Vancouver will need their attacking firepower to show up, and it has so far in 2026, but this remains a monumental task for the Whitecaps.

Here's everything you need to know.

For Vancouver

After Thursday's horror game, the 'Caps bounced back in the best way possible, making quick work of Minnesota United with a 6-0 scoreline, a game in which Vancouver scored four goals in the first half alone — three of them before the half-hour mark. Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka was a busy man, making four saves.

Vancouver is off to a flying start in league action, winning their first four matches and sitting at the top of the Supporters' Shield standings.

With their only loss of the season having come against Seattle and with the undeniable quality they possess, the Whitecaps cannot be ruled out of this tie just yet.

For Seattle

After a strong first leg, the Sounders were able to grab their third straight win, narrowly defeating the San Jose Earthquakes away from home in a 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from first-leg goal-scorer Paul Rothrock.

Schmetzer's Sounders currently sit fifth in the MLS Western Conference, also having lost just once, away to Real Salt Lake. With the head-to-head history favouring the Rave Green, Seattle will feel confident overcoming Vancouver and booking their place in the quarter-finals.

Head-to-Head

Across three games in Concacaf competitions, the Sounders have won twice, while the other game ended in a 1-1 draw at BC Place Stadium back in 2015. Seattle has also scored seven goals during that span, with Vancouver only scoring one goal in the previously mentioned draw.

Across 56 all-time meetings, the Sounders hold the upper hand with 25 wins to the Whitecaps' 15, playing to a draw 16 times.

Vancouver's biggest victory in the fixture came in 2013, a 4-1 win in Seattle, which, for this tie, would be a result good enough to send the Whitecaps through to the next round. They'll be hoping to replicate that on Wednesday.

Scenarios

The equation is simple enough on paper, if far harder to execute on the pitch.

A Vancouver win by three goals or more will see them advance, unless the scoreline is exactly 3-0, which would force extra time and potentially penalties. Anything less than a three-goal victory and the Whitecaps are out. A draw or a Seattle win sends the Sounders through to the next round.

Players to watch

After an electric first-leg performance, Vancouver will be keen to limit the damage on Seattle's left side, the territory belonging to Paul Arriola. Handed his first start by Brian Schmetzer since recovering from an ACL injury, Arriola delivered a man-of-the-match display, scoring twice in 62 minutes and even threatening a hat-trick before his first goal went in. He is expected to start on the left wing again, and thanks largely to him, Seattle head into the second leg in pole position to advance.

On the Vancouver side, Sunday's six-goal haul gave one player a chance to finally get going in 2026. Emmanuel Sabbi contributed a goal and an assist in 65 minutes, a much-needed return to form for the Italian-born American. After a breakout debut season that saw him score a career-high nine goals, Sabbi had gone without a goal or assist in his first five games this year. Seattle will know how dangerous he can be and will back themselves to contain him again, but with momentum restored, Sabbi will look to build on that performance and cause problems in a game where Vancouver desperately needs goals.

Availability

On Brian Schmetzer's side, Pedro de la Vega, Yeimar Gómez Andrade, Stuart Hawkins, Kim Kee-hee, and Ryan Sailor are all set to miss the match tomorrow, having been listed as unavailable last week. Hassani Dotson was day-to-day for the weekend's match, but wasn't named to the final squad, so it is unclear if the new signing will be available for the Sounders. Jordan Morris has a chance to be amongst the substitutes for Seattle, however.

For Jesper Sørensen's side, Sam Adekugbe, Ryan Gauld, Belal Halbouni, and Ranko Veselinović are all unavailable as they are still recovering from their injuries sustained last season. After missing the previous match due to calf tightness, nothing has been reported on the status of Tristan Blackmon, meaning a center-back duo of Ralph Priso and Mathías Laborda is likely. While Bruno Caicedo is still improving on his match fitness, it's unclear whether Cheikh Sabaly will be available for Vancouver, having missed the 'Caps' only match in the United States in the 4-1 win over Portland, which was later revealed to be due to his visa. Having been sorely missed in the first leg, Andrés Cubas will return for Vancouver after playing the full 90 minutes against Minnesota.
