The Vancouver Whitecaps continue to go from strength to strength, producing a dominant 4-1 victory over Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers at Providence Park.

Jesper Sørensen opted for just one change from the side that defeated Toronto FC last week, with Tate Johnson slotting in at left-back for Mathías Laborda as young Canadian Jeevan Badwal remained at the right-wing position despite the returns of both Emmanuel Sabbi and Kenji Cabrera.

Phil Neville made 6 changes to his starting 11, with some due to injury. Ian Smith came in for the suspended Jimer Fory, while Kamal Miller got the start as Alex Bonetig was unavailable due to injury. Without both Cole Bassett and Diego Chará, Portland had Erik Izoita and Joao Ortiz starting in the midfield. Alexander Aravena made his debut, starting as an attacking midfielder over fellow Chilean Felipe Mora, while Kevin Kelsy got the nod up top, replacing Gage Guerra.

Both sides came out with intent in the early stages, though no clear chances arrived until the 21st minute, with Kevin Kelsy and Édier Ocampo both picking up bookings in the 7th and 17th minutes, respectively.

The opener came through a sharp pressing move, as Jeevan Badwal's work won the ball back before Édier Ocampo set up Sebastian Berhalter, who found Brian White in the middle. The American striker redirected the pass into the net past James Pantemis to open the scoring.

A half-chance for Thomas Müller followed, before Aziel Jackson struck from a narrow angle, forcing Pantemis into a parry. The ball fell to Jeevan Badwal, but his redirected effort was blocked and cleared.

That brought the first half to a close, with Vancouver fans likely feeling their side could have gone into the break with a more comfortable advantage.

An early second-half free kick gave Sebastian Berhalter the chance to showcase his delivery, and he made the most of it. His ball in was met by Tristan Blackmon, who saw his initial left-footed effort strike the post before turning it home with his face to make it 2-0 and give Vancouver a more comfortable cushion.

Kristoffer Velde was shown a yellow card for a strong challenge on Édier Ocampo, with VAR taking a look at the incident for a possible red card before deciding against an upgrade — a decision that didn't sit well with many Whitecaps fans.

Vancouver introduced dynamic winger Emmanuel Sabbi in the 55th minute, replacing Jeevan Badwal, who had put in a decent shift.

The fun wasn't over for Vancouver fans, as some sharp play from Aziel Jackson teed up man of the match contender Sebastian Berhalter, who unleashed a powerful strike past James Pantemis to put the Whitecaps in command at 3-0.

Ian Smith was then booked in the 67th minute for a foul on Emmanuel Sabbi.

The Whitecaps made a triple change in the 69th minute, with Oliver Larraz, Kenji Cabrera, and Mathías Laborda coming on for Andrés Cubas, Aziel Jackson, and Édier Ocampo.

The substitution would almost immediately lead to a consolation for the hosts, as Larraz was dispossessed by João Ortiz, who set up Erik Izoita to score an absolute stunner on his Portland Timbers debut and pull one back for Phil Neville's side.

Vancouver had the final say in the 87th minute, as Oliver Larraz picked up the ball following a Sebastian Berhalter challenge and found Brian White, who laid it off to a surging Kenji Cabrera. Cabrera took his time before squaring it back to White, who tucked home his third goal of the season and Vancouver's fourth of the night.

The goal also came with a piece of history attached, as White became the all-time top scorer in this fixture with nine goals, surpassing club captain Ryan Gauld's tally of eight.

Mihail Gherasimencov, who spent 2025 on loan at Cavalry, marked his MLS debut late on by replacing Tate Johnson, with the Moldovan making a couple of promising runs, one of which resulted in a blocked strike.

After seven minutes of stoppage time, referee Victor Rivas brought proceedings to a close, confirming four straight wins across all competitions for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Portland will face Houston Dynamo next week, while Vancouver turn their attention to another Cascadia showdown — the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 against the Seattle Sounders.
