The end of the road for the Vancouver Whitecaps in another competition.

The Vancouver Whitecaps hosted FC Juárez on Friday night, needing a win to have a chance of qualifying for the next phase of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

Jesper Sørensen made seven changes to the side defeated by Atlante FC, as Tate Johnson, Tristan Blackmon, Thomas Müller, Jeevan Badwal, Emmanuel Sabbi, Johnny Selemani, and Brian White replaced Sam Adekugbe, Mathías Laborda, Andrés Cubas, Oliver Larraz, Cheikh Sabaly, Nikola Djordjevic, and Rayan Elloumi, with Müller wearing the captain's armband.

The game kicked off with the Whitecaps dominating, as 18-year-old winger Johnny Selemani started very well, creating a chance for J.C. Ngando, whose long shot sailed over the bar.

Vancouver would have the ball in the net early, as Selemani set up Thomas Müller for an easy finish. Still, referee Karen Hernández chalked off the goal for a "soft" foul against Selemani.

The Whitecaps would deservedly take the lead soon after, as Édier Ocampo played the ball towards Jeevan Badwal on the right-hand side of the box, and the midfielder emphatically finished on his weaker left foot to find the side's first Leagues Cup goal of 2026.

They kept going as Édier Ocampo found himself in space, but his shot went straight into the hands of Sebastián Jurado.

Jurado would be called into action again, as he denied Thomas Müller, who was through on goal but was pressured by a Juárez defender.

Brian White would be the next player to fire a shot, as after receiving a pass from J.C. Ngando, the American striker turned before hitting his effort over the bar.

Against the run of play, Juárez would find an equalizer after Johnny Selemani was similarly dispossessed as the Juárez defender was when Vancouver's first strike got disallowed. Karen Hernández played on, and following a through ball from Jairo Torres, Ettson Ayón hammered an acute-angled shot past a poorly positioned Isaac Boehmer.

Vancouver would have its best chance at that point with five minutes remaining, as J.C. Ngando played Brian White in, but Sebastián Jurado was up to the task and denied what looked like a certain second goal for the Whitecaps.

After Tate Johnson was booked for retaliating against Madson following a non-call on the other end, Brian White went down after his chance, signalling a change to the 'Caps bench after feeling tightness in his hamstring.

Rayan Elloumi would shortly enter the game, and he would have a glorious chance during the three additional minutes, as a beautiful cross from Johnny Selemani found the Tunisian striker, but his header was steered wide.

That would be it for the first half, as the Whitecaps were tied with the Liga MX visitors despite dominating Juárez in the attacking sense of the game.

The second half began with a double change for Vancouver, as Jesper Sørensen brought in Ryan Gauld and Mathías Laborda for Emmanuel Sabbi and Ralph Priso, who were taken off due to minutes restrictions for each player.

Vancouver would start the second half similarly to the first 45, as J.C. Ngando tested Jurado's gloves from distance, with the keeper equal to the task and making the save.

Goalscorer Ettson Ayón would have his evening cut short, as an injury forced him off the field, with former Hull City striker Óscar Estupiñán replacing him.

After Sebastián Jurado made another save on a long shot from J.C. Ngando, Johnny Selemani was taken down by Alejandro Mayorga, who received the first yellow card for the visitors.

The Whitecaps made a change, with standout performer Johnny Selemani coming off for Senegalese international Cheikh Sabaly.

Immediately after Ngando had a third long-range effort saved by Jurado, Juárez would score against the run of play, as Óscar Estupiñán got in behind the Whitecaps defence and buried it past Isaac Boehmer, who was once again caught out of position.

The Whitecaps would push for an equalizer, as J.C. Ngando was withdrawn for Nikola Djordjevic with 10 minutes remaining.

After an argument surrounding Thomas Müller, Guilherme Castilho would be shown a yellow card, as Juárez weren't playing cleanly and were probably lucky not to receive more cards from Karen Hernández, who also made some questionable calls throughout the game.

After five minutes were added on, the Whitecaps would push for an equalizer, but they weren't able to find a clear opportunity.

The dagger would come a minute after the allocated five minutes, as Isaac Boehmer was caught out of position and substitute Ricardinho fired the ball in from a long way out, sealing a potential quarter-final spot for FC Juárez and eliminating Vancouver in the process.

After the Brazilian was booked for taking his shirt off during the celebrations, Karen Hernández would blow the whistle for full time, officially eliminating the Vancouver Whitecaps from Phase Two qualification.

While the referee did make some questionable calls, this loss is more on Vancouver's lack of finishing on their big chances, along with their questionable counter-attacking defending.

They will now head down to Mexico to face Tigres UANL on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. PT in a meaningless final game for the Whitecaps. The priority for that game will be to leave without any new injuries as they shift their focus back to the league campaign.
