Friday the 26th saw Halifax Wanderers host Pacific as both clubs were ready to get back into it after the international break.
The two sides certainly had things to prove, as their fortunes have not been kind so far in the season, Halifax chasing a third win and Pacific chasing a win at all.
Recent CPL games had seen some high-scoring affairs, and this night did not disappoint, as Halifax sped to an early lead with a Pacific own goal and a fine strike from Arilla putting Halifax two ahead, before Bustos pulled one back two minutes later. The first half had been a back-and-forth affair, but if there was any hope that Halifax was going to run away with it without a fight, that seemed dashed as they went to the dressing rooms up 2-1.
The second half continued the battle, with Pacific celebrating a Gomulka goal equalizing them before a disastrous own goal put Halifax back in front minutes later. Isaiah Johnston continued his fine season by making it 4-2. If there was any hope left, a foul in stoppage time let Ciccarelli bring it to 5-2 from the penalty spot. Victory would once again elude Pacific, though Sartini can feel good about his boys.
Was it a complete demolition, though? The stats were a lot closer and show what a much more back-and-forth game for those watching. Pacific actually had more shots overall and more on target, and the teams were well-matched in possession and accuracy. Pacific did not get played off the field, but conceding two own goals in a game is unforgivable.
Combined with the conceded penalty, it feels like Pacific could have earned a draw here with more discipline.
Three points are a welcome gift for Halifax.
As for Yiannis and Pacific? They have scored goals in their last four games and have just two points to show for it. Lingering so close to results and yet having wins evade them must be difficult for morale.
