Major League Soccer is back!

The Vancouver Whitecaps return to league action as they take on the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field in their first match on the East Coast in 2026.

Here’s everything you need to know heading into tomorrow’s match.

How the Chicago Fire enter this match

It's been a while since the Chicago Fire was in action, as it faced a Canadian side in Toronto FC, taking them down at Soldier Field by a 2-1 scoreline.

Chicago has been very good against Canadian opposition, as in addition to the win against Toronto, they've already defeated CF Montréal twice this season, a 3-0 win at home and a 2-0 win at Stade Saputo.

In addition to the record, they've signed football legend Robert Lewandowski, who is likely to feature in this match tomorrow.

Currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand, the Chicago Fire were already dangerous with league top scorer Hugo Cuypers, but now they've added even more firepower ahead of this clash against the 'Caps.

How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this match

The Vancouver Whitecaps got a couple of games in the Canadian Championship to help them prepare for the remaining MLS season, unlike Chicago, who haven't played a competitive game since May.

A 4-1 win at home, followed by a 1-1 draw at ATCO Field, secured Vancouver's spot in the semi-finals of the Canadian Championship at the expense of Cavalry FC.

This will be Vancouver's first game on the East Coast in 2026, but not their first game against Eastern opposition, as they've taken on Toronto FC and New York City FC at home, taking them down 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.

While they haven't signed any new players, the Whitecaps have gotten some huge returns from injury in Ryan Gauld and Sam Adekugbe, with the former featuring in both games against Cavalry.

Currently sitting at the peak in the Western Conference, Vancouver has a game in hand over the San Jose Earthquakes, who sit in second with the same number of points as Vancouver, so Jesper Sørensen’s side will want to build a gap between themselves and second.

Head-to-Head

These two sides have history, meeting each other on fifteen occasions since 2011.

The Vancouver Whitecaps hold the series lead, recording seven wins and four draws, while the Chicago Fire have recorded four wins.

The most recent encounter came last year at BC Place Stadium, with the Chicago Fire taking advantage of a shorthanded Vancouver side due to the international break and defeating them by a 3-1 scoreline, as Hugo Cuypers and Daniel Ríos traded goals in the first half, and Philip Zinckernagel and Rominigue Kouamé got the deciding goals in the second half.

The most recent game in Chicago came in 2023, as a first-half goal from Brian White got the Whitecaps a 1-0 win away from home.

Chicago's biggest win came in 2017 at home in a 4-0 win, while Vancouver's came at home back in 2013, recording a 3-1 win.

Players to Watch

While the focus is deservedly on the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, there's already a prolific European striker tearing it up in the league for Chicago, and his name is Hugo Cuypers. The 29-year-old is enjoying an unreal season, scoring 13 goals in 12 games and leading the league in scoring ahead of Lionel Messi. Cuypers has only been held scoreless in one MLS game, and that came against Toronto FC. The Belgian has switched his jersey number to 99 in honour of the legend Lewandowski, but the same dangerous striker who has torn up the MLS will still be the lethal Designated Player that Vancouver must look out for, as he's likely to play the full 90, which he's done in all but one game.

201 games, 90 goals, the legend of Brian White continues to grow in Vancouver Whitecaps history. With ten goals recorded in 14 matches across all competitions, Brian White is enjoying a fruitful season for Vancouver, becoming the club's second all-time top scorer in the process. White returned to competitive action with a bang against Cavalry, recording a goal and assist in the club's 4-1 win in leg one. Chicago has their explosive striker, but make no mistake, Vancouver also has one, and his name is Brian White.

Availability

For the Chicago Fire, André Franco is still recovering from an ACL injury, as another question is centred around Robert Lewandowski's fitness.

For the Vancouver Whitecaps, Kenji Cabrera, Belal Halbouni, Ralph Priso, Cheikh Sabaly, and Emmanuel Sabbi will remain out for the club due to injuries, while Sebastian Berhalter is unavailable due to league policy that requires players who are returning from the FIFA World Cup to be mandated to ten days of rest, as tomorrow will be the final day of rest for Berhalter. The good news is that Andrés Cubas will be eligible, as he has served his ten-day rest period.
