Back in competitive action, and back to their best!
The Vancouver Whitecaps had no issues against Cavalry, dispatching the Alberta-based side 4-1 at Swangard Stadium.
Jesper Sørensen made six changes to the side that last played against San Diego FC at the end of May. The biggest additions were the returns of Ranko Veselinović and Ryan Gauld, with captain Gauld making his first appearance of 2026. They replaced Mathías Laborda and Thomas Müller, while Mihail Gherasimencov, Oliver Larraz, J.C. Ngando, and Bruno Caicedo came in for Tate Johnson, Sebastian Berhalter, Aziel Jackson, and Kenji Cabrera, with Jackson having left the club following the end of his loan. Yohei Takaoka returned to the team sheet but started on the bench. Sam Adekugbe, Kenji Cabrera, Belal Halbouni, Ralph Priso, Cheikh Sabaly, and Emmanuel Sabbi were all unavailable due to injury. Sebastian Schonlau was also absent following his departure from the club, leaving Jesper Sørensen with only eight substitutes instead of the maximum nine.
Tommy Wheldon Jr. made a couple of changes to the Cavalry side that defeated Atlético Ottawa on Saturday, as Michael Baldisimo and Nathaniel Edwards came in for Harrison Paton and Ali Musse. Star striker Tobias Warschewski remained unavailable due to an ankle injury, meaning Caniggia Elva made a second straight start up front.
The game kicked off, and the Whitecaps wasted no time opening the scoring. Following a long throw-in that wasn't properly cleared, a shot from Ranko Veselinović was comically redirected into his own net by Adam Pearlman, giving the 'Caps the lead just over a minute into the match.

After that, Cavalry nearly equalized, but Sergio Camargo was denied by a good save from Isaac Boehmer.
Jeevan Badwal had a good opportunity after being picked out by Bruno Caicedo, but the young midfielder misfired and blazed his effort over the bar, much to the relief of Nathan Ingham.
On the stroke of halftime, Cavalry found an equalizer. It was another throw-in that led to a goal, as following some questionable Whitecaps defending, Daan Klomp fired the ball past Boehmer at his near post, giving Cavalry a goal at the perfect time.

During the two additional minutes, Tristan Blackmon was the first player booked by Yusri Rudolf for a foul.
That was it for the first half, as the Whitecaps had shown clear signs that they weren't really at their best due to the lack of competitive action over the past month.
After the break, Ryan Gauld was substituted off for Thomas Müller.
Cavalry would receive their first booking, as Eryk Kobza was booked for dissent following a foul from Daan Klomp.
Just after the hour mark, the Whitecaps would retake the lead, as after a Brian White shot was blocked, Thomas Müller was on the spot to tap in his fifth goal of the season.

Tommy Wheldon Jr. went to the bench immediately to bring on Ali Musse, who replaced Caniggia Elva.
It wouldn't take long for another goal. After a long-range shot from Édier Ocampo was saved, Brian White would head in his 90th goal for the club on his 200th appearance, putting the game to bed in the process.

The Whitecaps would nearly have another goal, as a cross from Oliver Larraz was glanced by Thomas Müller, but it just missed the bottom corner.
Cavalry would make a double change, as Harrison Paton and Jay Herdman entered the match for Michael Badisimo and Nathaniel Edwards.
Müller would surprisingly be withdrawn for Rayan Elloumi, as Jesper Sørensen later stated the German superstar had a dead leg following a collision, but it's nothing to be concerned about, as Müller shouldn't miss any games. Nikola Djordjevic also came in as he replaced Bruno Caicedo.
It wouldn't take long for the Tunisian international to score, as following a giveaway from Eryk Kobza, Rayan Elloumi played the ball to Brian White, who returned it before Elloumi struck the ball into the bottom right corner from distance, potentially putting the tie to bed.

J.C. Ngando would be shown a yellow card after landing on Ali Musse following a sliding challenge from the Cavalry winger.
Niko Myroniuk and Levi Laing were the final changes for the visitors, as Sergio Camargo and Adam Pearlman made way.
Minutes later, the hosts would make their final two changes, as Tristan Blackmon and Mihail Gherasimencov were withdrawn for Mathías Laborda and Tate Johnson.
In the three additional minutes, Goteh Ntignee was shown a yellow card after repeatedly fouling throughout the match.
That was it, as the Whitecaps have grabbed a sizeable lead heading into the second leg in Calgary.
That game will happen on Monday at ATCO Field, with kickoff set for 7:30 pm MT / 6:30 pm PT.
