August is just about over, and the Eastern Conference playoff race is as tight as ever. Just seven points separate the bottom nine teams in the conference, and CF Montréal is right in that mix, sitting three points out of the final playoff spot, but needing to leapfrog at least five teams to get in.

Every point matters at this stage of the campaign, and while Saturday's opponents in Inter Miami don't need to worry about a playoff race, their run of poor form in recent weeks has left them 10 points back of Nashville for the top spot in the East and the Supporters' Shield.

These two sides met just last month on July 25, with a late Luis Suárez penalty enough to give Miami a 1-0 victory at Stade Saputo.

Montréal will hope to return the favour on the road at Nu Stadium this weekend, where the Herons have been surprisingly poor since it opened back in April, sporting just a 3W-4D-2L home record in MLS play this year.

How Montréal enter the match

The Impact are now unbeaten in four after a 2-2 draw at home to the LA Galaxy in Alexis Sánchez's debut at Stade Saputo. That being said, they've only won one of those four games, and desperately need to start turning more of those one-point affairs into three as the playoff race continues to tighten up.

More involvement from Sánchez may spark some more offence, as may the reported re-acquisition of Dante Sealy from Colorado, who scored nine times for the club in 2025.

That being said, Sealy won't be with the squad this weekend, and their Chilean star is still working his way back to full match fitness. 

Prince Owusu has held up his end of the bargain in 2026, and now has goals in four straight, taking him up to the top-five for goals in MLS this campaign. Behind the Ghanaian striker, though, there hasn't been enough goal support. 

Wiki Carmona still sits second on the team in goals with four, and he's been out through injury since the World Cup break. Backup striker Daniel Ríos has three, but he's not always the most effective as a winger. Nobody else on the team has more than two goals.

That's while young wingers like Hennadiy Synchuk, whose underlying numbers look great, but he can't seem to find the final action, and Noah Streit, who's coming into his own but still only has one goal involvement on the year, try to find their footing. At this stage of the season, results become paramount, and the bleu-blanc-noir need more reliable sources of goals in the team.

How Miami enter the match

It's now five winless in all competitions for the team in pink after a pretty embarrassing home loss to Toronto last weekend, and things are not going well for Lionel Messi and co at the moment.

The old errors have begun to rear their ugly heads, with the transition defence a total mess, and they keep conceding goals, so many that their star-studded attack can't get them out of the mess.

That's what happened when they got walloped in Nashville in a statement game atop the East, and also what happened against TFC last week.

Some of this is due to an injury to Micael, the team's best defender, but some of it boils down to poor tactical decisions and the personnel being too slow at times.

Teams look to sit back until Miami turns the ball over, and then use any sort of speed to get back up the pitch to catch the older Herons players sleeping. Without many reliable emergency defenders, too often there are far too few pink jerseys back against opposing counter-attacks.

This has prompted a managerial change, with Cristian 'Kily' González officially set to take over for Guillermo Hoyos in the coming weeks. 

However, at times an upset Miami is not a team you want to face. They have so many offensive weapons that can score on a whim, and the defensive structure must be pristine to keep the Herons off the scoresheet.

Availability

For Montréal, Carmona is back and available this weekend for the first time since May, while Brayan Vera is fine after being substituted against LA at the half. Frankie Amaya, Bode Hifalgo and Efrain Morales should remain out, but all seem to be making progress on a return. Brayan Ceballos will miss this game due to yellow card accumulation.

On Miami's side, they'll welcome the return of midfielder Yannick Bright from suspension, though Micael and Mateo Silvetti should remain out through injury, while Luján will likely miss out after limping off against Toronto.

Projected XIs

TrueNorthFoot projects an unchanged Montréal side, as Sánchez continues to wait for his first start, while Miami swaps out Telasco Segovia for Bright, Facundo Mura for Luján at centre-back, and Sergio Reguilón for Noah Allen at left-back.
