That's Canada's first game of the March international window done and dusted.

After a poor first half, Les Rouges played out a 2-2 draw, with a pair of spot kicks proving decisive.

Canada lined up in their classic 4-4-2, with Dayne St. Clair in goal behind a back four of Richie Laryea, Kamal Miller, Joel Waterman, and Niko Sigur. Ali Ahmed and Tajon Buchanan started on the wings, with Mathieu Choinière partnering Nathan Saliba in the middle. Jonathan David wore the captain's armband and led the line alongside Cyle Larin. Ismaël Koné was absent through suspension after picking up a red card, with several other key players also missing through injury. Derek Cornelius and Luc de Fougerolles were named to the bench after returning from their respective injury layoffs.

Canada made a dreadful start, as a cheap giveaway from Kamal Miller sent Icelandic striker Orri Óskarsson clear on goal. He made no mistake, finishing composedly past Dayne St. Clair to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at BMO Field after just nine minutes.

A poorly struck effort from Richie Laryea followed before Nathan Saliba registered Canada's first shot on target, though his attempted curler was hit straight into the hands of Elías Ólafsson.

It wouldn't get any better for Canada, as a perfectly threaded ball from Mikael Ellertsson resulted in a thumping strike from Orri Óskarsson to complete his double, as the Real Sociedad player gave Iceland a 2-0 lead over Les Rouges in the 21st minute.

Jonathan David was next to test the goalkeeper, receiving a pass from Ali Ahmed before turning and firing straight at Ólafsson.

Canada earned a free kick from a promising position in the 35th minute after Ali Ahmed was brought down by midfielder Jón Thorsteinsson, who was shown the game's first yellow card. Mathieu Choinière stepped up to take it, but his curling effort drifted wide of the near post.

After two minutes of added time, referee Jon Freeman brought a poor first-half display from the Canadians to a close.

The second half began more promisingly for Jesse Marsch's side, with Cyle Larin meeting a Choinière corner in the 50th minute, though his header from a narrow angle went into the side netting.

Canada's best chance of the game arrived just before the hour mark, as a beautiful move ended with Tajon Buchanan threading a pinpoint pass to Ali Ahmed, who fed Jonathan David in the box. The Juventus striker's left-footed effort, however, went straight into Ólafsson's hands.

Marsch opted for a triple substitution just after the hour mark, with Daniel Jebbison and Jonathan Osorio coming on for Cyle Larin and Mathieu Choinière. The third change saw Ali Ahmed make way for the newly called-up Marcelo Flores, who made his long-awaited Canada debut.

The equalizer came shortly after, as Tajon Buchanan drove into the box before being brought down by Mikael Ellertsson, leaving referee Jon Freeman with no choice but to point to the spot. Jonathan David stepped up and made no mistake, firing into the bottom right corner as Ólafsson guessed wrong, pulling Canada level in the 67th minute.

After a couple of wild efforts from Richie Laryea and Nathan Saliba, Canada worked their way into the box again. Daniel Jebbison produced some fine play before being bundled over by Hördur Magnusson, and Jon Freeman immediately pointed to the spot for the second time, much to the delight of the BMO Field crowd.

Before the kick was taken, Marsch brought on Derek Cornelius for Kamal Miller, with the defender making his first appearance since being taken off after just 33 minutes in November's friendly against Venezuela.

It was déjà vu in the 76th minute, as Jonathan David sent Ólafsson the wrong way once again, firing into the bottom right corner to put Canada ahead, sending the BMO Field crowd into a frenzy.

The excitement was short-lived, however. In the 80th minute, Tajon Buchanan was shown a red card for violent conduct after throwing an elbow in the direction of Mikael Ellertsson's face. While it remains unclear from the replay whether Buchanan made contact, the rules left referee Jon Freeman with little choice. It marked the third consecutive Tier 1 friendly in which Canada has had a man sent off, following red cards for Ali Ahmed and Ismaël Koné against Ecuador and Venezuela, respectively, in the November window.

Jonathan David and Nathan Saliba were both taken off in the 87th minute, as Liam Millar and Ralph Priso entered the match, with the latter making his senior debut for Canada after featuring in the January friendly against Guatemala.

As the fourth official signalled three minutes of stoppage time, Dayne St. Clair was called into action for the first and only time, denying Brynjólfur Willumsson from a narrow angle.

That would prove to be the last meaningful moment, as Canada salvaged a point on the back of a much-improved second-half display after a difficult opening 45.

Canada is back in action on Tuesday, as Les Rouges take on Tunisia at BMO Field, with kickoff set at 7:30 pm ET / 4:30 pm PT.
