After the March international break, the Vancouver Whitecaps return to action this weekend.

Coming back from a couple of rough losses to the Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes, Jesper Sørensen's side takes on a struggling Portland Timbers at BC Place.

Here's everything you need to know heading into Saturday's clash.

How the Vancouver Whitecaps come into the match

It hasn't been a great run as of late for Vancouver. After going five straight matches unbeaten to open up the season, they've won once in their last four games, with that lone victory coming in a 6-0 rout over Minnesota United.

The second-placed side in the Western Conference will be playing four matches in April, all of them at home, due to the upcoming World Cup and usage of BC Place in June and July.

Regardless, this is a massive opportunity for the 'Caps to get some big points on the board before a difficult stretch in May.

How the Portland Timbers come into the match

Phil Neville's side hasn't had a great start so far.

Currently sitting in 14th place with a 1-1-3 record, the Timbers have had it rough this season, hoping this month could be the turning point that they desperately need.

In rivalries, it often doesn't matter where you are placed in the league table, and Portland will be taking that mindset across the border.

Head-to-head

These two sides have already faced each other in 2026, with the Whitecaps taking a comfortable 4-1 victory, with Brian White scoring twice.

The last match at BC Place happened in September last season, with the two sides splitting the honours in a 1-1 draw, with White once again scoring.

In 66 meetings, the Whitecaps have won 24 times, while Portland has claimed 25 wins, and 17 matches have ended in a draw. A Vancouver win would even up the overall head-to-head record.

The 'Caps' largest win margin came back in the 2024 MLS Playoffs, cruising to a 5-0 win powered by a Ryan Gauld hat trick.

Players to watch

Arriving in the midst of the 2025 season, Kenji Cabrera has been a smart recruit from Axel Schuster, with the Peruvian putting in some good shifts this season. He hasn't had the minutes in MLS play he expected, with three games played in the league and zero starts. He did get three starts in four appearances during Vancouver's Champions Cup run, scoring a vital goal in their 2-0 win over C.S. Cartaginés. Cabrera has grabbed an assist in his limited MLS minutes, which ironically came in the reverse fixture against Portland. After a couple of rough performances with the Peruvian national team, the U-22 Initiative winger looks to make a bigger mark with the Whitecaps in this rivalry game.

Portland also made a splash in the middle of the 2025 MLS season, acquiring Norwegian winger Kristoffer Velde on a Designated Player contract from Greek giants Olympiacos FC. He's put in some consistent performances on both flanks for the Timbers. This season, he has found the back of the net twice in the five matches he's played, all of which he has started. Velde was electric last season in the previously mentioned 1-1 draw at BC Place, as Portland will turn to his magic to potentially pull off a shock result in Canada.

Availability

Sam Adekugbe, Andrés Cubas, Ryan Gauld, Belal Halbouni, and Ranko Veselinović all remain out for the Whitecaps, while Adekugbe and Veselinović are nearing returns, with the latter closest to a return. Andrés Cubas is ahead of schedule and could be back for Vancouver's clash against NYCFC. Ralph Priso is out for tomorrow's clash, after he suffered a hamstring injury during Canada's 0-0 draw against Tunisia, with Sarita Patel listing him as out for an "indefinite" period of time. Bruno Caicedo has had the international break to earn some fitness, as he's in line to make his Whitecaps debut.

For the Portland Timbers, Omir Fernandez and Zac McGraw remain out for the Timbers, with Kamal Miller added to that list after receiving a red card in Portland's 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy. Cole Bassett is once again questionable with a lower-body injury. New signing José Caicedo has received his visa and will make his Portland Timbers debut after arriving from Liga MX side Pumas UNAM.
