Time for a heavyweight matchup at BC Place!
The Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Houston Dynamo tomorrow night, as the Texas-based side looks to overtake the Whitecaps, while Vancouver looks to build a gap at the top of the Western Conference.
Here's everything you need to know heading into the game.
How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this match
For Jesper Sørensen, his side will be looking to build off a huge win on Sunday, as Vancouver begins a two-match homestand.
That huge win came against the Seattle Sounders, as goals from Rayan Elloumi and Thomas Müller secured a massive 2-0 win for the visiting Whitecaps.
Currently sitting at the top of the Western Conference with a game in hand, the Whitecaps will want to win tomorrow's game to build some good form after they had a poor stretch to begin their return to action after the World Cup.
How the Houston Dynamo enter this match
For Ben Olsen, his side has picked up some serious form, winning their last four games while going undefeated in six straight games.
In their most recent outing, a penalty goal from Guilherme secured a 1-0 win for the Dynamo at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Currently sitting in second place in the Western Conference, the Dynamo look really dangerous, and after winning the reverse fixture between these two sides, they will be fairly confident that they can take down Vancouver once again.
Head-to-head
In the previously mentioned reverse fixture, a late winner from Guilherme secured a 1-0 win for the Dynamo, and Yohei Takaoka was also shown a red card.
In the 29 matches between these two sides, the series is even at eleven wins apiece, while the other seven games have ended in draws.
So if we do have a winner tomorrow night, which team will have the series lead heading into the next meeting?
Players to watch
Arguably Vancouver's most important player in their system is Paraguayan defensive midfielder Andrés Cubas, who continues to do the dirty work for Vancouver time and time again. The stats will never prove the 30-year-old's importance to the club, but here's one: Cubas leads the league in total tackles with 68 tackles, while also leading the league in tackles per 90, completing 4.9 tackles per game. He consistently proves to be one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, arguably the best, but that's a conversation for a different day. As long as Andrés Cubas is starting in Vancouver's midfield, the Whitecaps will always have a good chance to take home the three points.
The man who scored the winner in the reverse fixture and is arguably the signing of the season, Brazilian forward Guilherme Augusto, has taken Major League Soccer by storm. Since arriving as a Designated Player from Santos FC, the 31-year-old has recorded twelve goals and five assists in nineteen games. The forward has been Houston's main source of attacking threat, as Jack McGlynn is the only player able to match one of Guilherme's numbers, which is his assist tally. Houston will be dangerous on the attack tomorrow, and the best way to stop that attack is to stop the excelling Brazilian on the left.
Availability
For Vancouver, Kenji Cabrera, Bruno Caicedo, Belal Halbouni, Kwasi Poku, Ranko Veselinović, and Brian White will remain out due to injuries. Jeevan Badwal is also set to miss this game for Vancouver after sustaining a head injury against Seattle. Aleksa Cvetković's visa situation will force him to miss out on this game.
For Houston, Jimmy Maurer is the only confirmed absence, as Felipe Andrade's status remains questionable. Ibrahim Aliyu's red card has been rescinded, so he will be available for selection. Head coach Ben Olsen will return to the sidelines tomorrow after serving his one-match ban due to yellow card accumulation.
