Promise “Tobi” David has filed a one-time switch to represent the Canadian Men’s National Team.
The 23-year-old Union Saint-Gilloise forward, born in Canada, is in phenomenal form in the Belgian 1st tier, scoring 13 times and tallying 3 assists in 27 appearances across all competitions.
He joined Union Saint-Gilloise at the start of the 2024/25 European season, transferring from Kalju FC for €400k.
In an interview with The Athletic, the player confirmed his intentions to play for Les Rouges.
“Canadian football raised me,” David said. “So I feel like I owe it back to Canada to perform for them. Playing for Nigeria was great, but it was just an opportunity. I like what (Jesse Marsch) has done with the team. You see the rapid increase. I think being a part of that history is an opportunity I should not pass up.” he told Joshua Kloke of The Athletic.
He is expected to be named to the final roster for the Concacaf Nations League finals next month.

In 2016, David left Toronto FC’s academy to join League1 Ontario side Vaughan Azzurri before moving to Croatia nearly four years later.
Before his eventual move to Belgium, he had stints with FC Tulsa in the USL Championship, Valletta and Sirens FC in Malta, and Kalju FC, where his performances earned him a €400k transfer to Union SG.
Promise David, nicknamed “Tobi” by his club, will add some important depth to the striker position in Canada, likely battling for a starting spot against Cyle Larin.
