The results this weekend

Two games were played Friday as Inter Toronto visited Atlético Ottawa and Forge ventured to Laval.

Toronto looked ready to take names as Yeates scored within the first handful of minutes, before the game settled into a protracted back-and-forth battle. However, in the long run, Ottawa brought just a little bit more to the contest, with Tabla tying the game late in the second half and Château getting the winning goal deep into stoppage time. Ottawa would be victorious 2-1 on home turf.

In Quebec, Supra stood ready to show what they have accomplished so far this season by taking on a Forge team that has had a few recent stumbles. The game was a physical contest with seven yellow cards handed out, as the Quebec side was determined not to give away anything. Neither side produced a whole lot of great chances, and Forge felt kind of stymied in their usual style of play. The decider would end up being a penalty goal towards the end of the first half, letting Supra claim a 1-0 win over the Hammers.

Saturday in Alberta, Cavalry hosted Vancouver FC to settle some scores. Vancouver has been flying high lately, and Cavalry needs every point they can get if they hope to sort out Forge in the standings.

Cavalry away is never an easy affair, and Irving had to make some pretty heroic saves, but at the start of the second half, Cavalry managed to score. Vancouver felt like they were struggling to really create chances, with most of the options they generated being fairly poor quality.

That doesn't mean the team was poor, but at the end of the day, Cavs 1, Eagles 0.

Finally on Sunday, we got to see a goal fest as Halifax and Pacific laid into each other in the fight for coastal domination. What followed was a back-and-forth affair as Halifax would score three times, only for Pacific to equalize each time. In stoppage time, it seemed like it was going to go down as a point for each, with Pacific only clawing their way to a point when a free kick into the throng in the Halifax penalty box produced the fourth goal. Beautifully headed in, and at the final whistle, Pacific had their first win of the season!

The standings

Pacific (8th)

Yeah, yeah, Pacific is last. But they are last with eight points. Eight! I've mused before on how it is sometimes as much about which games you score the goals in as how many you score, and Pacific certainly can score them when they get hot.

Is this the start of a run with a few wins under their belts? I think we all hope so.

They face Ottawa next in an away game.

Inter Toronto (7th)

Nothing gained despite the hard work, though the results elsewhere mean that the playoff spots are not any further away than they were before. The bad news is that the next chance to get points is a trip to Hamilton.

Halifax Wanderers (6th)

Giving up three points that Vanni and his squad almost certainly thought were theirs will be a big blow in the final months. The Wanderers need to put forward a determined effort if they are going to salvage things because there are few chances left to miss out on.

They will host Cavalry on Monday.

Supra du Québec (5th)

Tweaking Forge in the nose is the sort of thing you have to be able to do if you want to be noticed.

Twenty-two points is five behind Vancouver, AND their next game is against the Eagles. You won't want to miss this.

Vancouver FC (4th)

VFC fans were obviously hoping to get more out of the weekend, but I think there is still some lingering shakiness when the squad gets pushed hard. They get to chill until Sunday, when they host Supra at home.

Atlético Ottawa (3rd)

Ottawa put some space behind them and gained ground on Forge. With Pacific travelling to Ontario on Saturday, I suspect they view that as three more points for the taking, but are they?

Forge (2nd)

Racking up their fourth loss, the invincible giants are looking a little more vulnerable, but they have a sturdy eight points ahead of Ottawa, and they are only trailing the Cavs by two. Saturday is derby day at home as Inter Toronto visits.

Cavalry (1st)

Probably no doubt that they would have liked a bit more of a glorious win, but a win is a win, and a win got them above Forge. They will rest up until they travel to Halifax for the Monday game.
