CPL action returns to ATCO Field for the first time in six weeks on Saturday afternoon as Cavalry FC host the Halifax Wanderers for the second time this season. The home side will look to build on the momentum generated by their record-setting attendance earlier this week for their Canadian Championship quarter-final match against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The two sides have met once already this season, with Cavalry earning a 2-0 victory thanks to second-half goals from Goteh Ntignee and Daan Klomp. Cavalry created an impressive 22 shots on that occasion and held 62% possession. Halifax will need to limit those opportunities this time around if they hope to leave Alberta with any points.
Cavalry enter the match on an impressive run of league form. Their 8-2-1 record is good enough for second place in the league, and the Albertan side lead the CPL in goal difference, goals scored, and goals conceded. Their most recent league result was an impressive 3-0 victory over Atlético Ottawa, where they did all of their scoring in the first half before sealing the result with a controlled defensive performance after the break.
Halifax come into the match well-rested, having not played since their 2-1 victory over Pacific on 5 July. Currently sitting fourth in the table with a 4-3-6 record, the Wanderers will need to keep collecting points as the halfway mark of their season arrives with the conclusion of this match. Halifax are fourth in the league in goals scored with 17, but an inexperienced back line has them in the bottom half of the league for goals conceded. Against a potent Cavalry attack, limiting chances in and around their penalty area will need to be a critical part of Saturday's game plan.
Cavalry were without striker Tobias Warschewski for their last CPL match against Atlético Ottawa and the first leg of their Canadian Championship tie against the Whitecaps. The German returned for the second leg on Monday and completed the full 90 minutes, although Cavalry's desperation for goals may have accelerated his ideal return-to-play plan.
In another note, Cavalry head coach and general manager Tommy Wheldon Jr. will be away from the club this weekend. His brother, Jay Wheldon, and former Cavalry player Nik Ledgerwood will take on elevated roles in his absence.
The visitors welcomed the much-anticipated return of Thomas Meilleur-Giguère last time out. The 28-year-old played 12 minutes in his first appearance since suffering a lower-body injury in April. While the defender is not expected to reclaim his usual starting role just yet, a longer spell off the bench is possible.
Halifax also announced the departure of defender Marcus Godinho. The Canadian played more than 1,000 minutes for the Wanderers this season and will join USL Championship side Sporting Club Jacksonville.
In addition, Halifax have acquired Canadian forward Adonijah Reid from Sporting Club Jacksonville. Reid has previously played in Canada with Pacific and York, where he made 80 appearances, logged more than 3,500 minutes, and scored 10 goals across all competitions. The 26-year-old's availability for Saturday's match remains uncertain, but Halifax will hope his goal-scoring ability can provide a boost in the second half of the season.
