ATCO Field will be the setting of a critical battle between the two CPL Shield frontrunners in 2026.

The premier fixture on the matchweek 22 schedule pits hosts Cavalry against bitter rivals Forge in a contest that will shape how the final weeks of the season unfold in a season-long Shield struggle.

Head-to-head this year

Saturday's combatants share identical 1-1-1 records against one another in 2026.

The first matches of the season were both played in Hamilton, with the first of two ending in a scoreless draw. Forge would pull out a 1-0 home victory at the end of May courtesy of an Antoine Batisse header off a corner kick in the 70th minute.

When the scene shifted back to the west, Cavalry played to a thrilling 2-1 victory in mid-August. Ismael Oketokoun put the visitors up early, but a first-half red card to Rezart Rama, his second of the campaign against Cavalry, would see the hosts play with an advantage for nearly an hour. Daan Klomp equalized for Cavalry in the 62nd minute, and Owen Antoniuk would put the men in red ahead with a long-distance screamer in the 83rd.

Three points for either side in Saturday's match will reshape how both prepare for the final stretch of the season, with CPL Shield aspirations in the minds of both clubs.

Cavalry come into the match sitting first in the table. Their 15-4-2 league record and eight-match unbeaten streak put them on 49 points, nine shy of Forge's record. Most recently, the Albertan squad capped off a two-match road trip with a closely fought 1-0 victory away to Pacific.

How Forge come into the match

Forge sit second in the table, four points behind Cavalry. The Hammers are coming off a 3-0 league win over Atletico Ottawa last Saturday and a thrilling 1-0 Canadian Championship semifinal win over FC Supra on Tuesday. Ben Paton's 26th-minute tally would be all Forge needed to punch their ticket to their second-ever Canadian Championship final.

Golden Glove stalemate

Nathan Ingham and Dimitry Bertaud have been far and away the class of the field of CPL goalkeepers in 2026. A combined 26 goals against in 41 league matches sets up Saturday's contest to be a low-scoring affair, but no possibilities can be ruled out when these sides collide.

New signings

Cavalry announced the loan signing of CMNTU20 player Owen Graham-Roache from CF Montreal on Thursday. The 18-year-old has four appearances across MLS and Canadian Championship action this season, as well as 12 appearances and eight goals for the national U20 squad.

Not to be outdone, Forge have brought in CanMNT veteran Lucas Cavallini. The 33-year-old Toronto native most recently competed in Liga MX with Puebla and will become the first player in CPL history to have played a FIFA World Cup match.

Both Graham-Roache and Cavallini are considered to be available for Saturday's affair, but the exact scope of their respective roles remains undetermined.

Availability

Cavalry have been without winger Ali Musse for their last two matches for non-injury-related reasons. His status ahead of this weekend's match is unconfirmed.

Goteh Ntignee returned as a bench option for the first time in several weeks against Pacific. His speed down the wing could be a crucial asset for Cavalry if they hope to score against Forge's stout back line.

The club will remain without midfielder Michael Baldisimo, who is away competing at the Asian Games.

Hassan Ayari logged his first quarter-hour for the Cavs last week as well, suggesting that another appearance off the bench for the now second-newest acquisition may be forthcoming.

Forge centrepiece Kyle Bekker suffered a lower-body injury in Tuesday's Canadian Championship tie against Supra. No official confirmation has come out regarding his availability going forward, but the visible emotion shown by Bekker after being forced to exit in the early stages of the first half suggests an immediate return is quite unlikely, with the 33-year-old having been required to undergo additional testing throughout the week.
