HAL Halifax 1 FT 3 FOR Forge FC

Forge defeated the Halifax Wanderers in Nova Scotia 3-1, making it four wins in five matches to open the league campaign.

The Hammers have yet to concede from open play, with their only goal against having come from the penalty spot today.

Offensively poor from HFX Wanderers

Despite a late surge in the final 10 minutes, the Halifax Wanderers struggled to generate scoring chances. The Nova Scotians finished with nine shots, three on target, but had difficulty progressing into Forge’s half and creating meaningful opportunities. They ended the first half without a single shot and had registered just one effort before the 80th minute.

From a tactical standpoint, Forge appeared to be the more influential side throughout the match. In his pre-match interview, Vanni Sartini mentioned potential changes in both personnel and tactics ahead of next week’s Canadian Championship clash with Forge, setting the stage for adjustments heading into that fixture.

Forge finally concede, still yet to in open play

An impressive defensive run has come to an end for the Hamilton-based Forge. After five weeks of the 2026 CPL season, they have finally conceded, albeit through a controversial penalty awarded to the Halifax Wanderers.

Dimitry Bertaud guessed correctly and got a hand to the shot, but the power and placement from Isaiah Johnston proved just enough, as he converted his third straight penalty. Bertaud still had a solid outing, making three saves to bring his total to five through five matches.

The silver lining for Forge is that they remain yet to concede from open play, a statistic that can't be ignored five matches into the season.

Kyle Bekker makes his return to the pitch

A Forge legend returned to the field, debuting in his eighth consecutive CPL season. Kyle Bekker entered the match in the 77th minute and immediately looked at home, bringing energy and composure to the midfield for the Hammers.

His return came sooner than many expected following treatment for testicular cancer. While it was a great sight to see Bekker back, his availability creates a selection problem for Bobby Smyrniotis, albeit a good one. Anthony Aromatario, Ben Paton, and Noah Jensen have all impressed in midfield, leaving Forge with a crowded group in the centre of the park: Depth, an 'issue' that the Hammers have had in recent years.

Standout performers of the match

Tristian Borges: Was a constant threat on the right side, showed excellent touches and skill on the ball before being subbed out in the 60th minute.

Hoce Massunda: Secured a goal and an assist for his side, was very clinical and accurate in his passing.

Jason Bahamboula: Looked very dangerous and influential when he came on, had a strong strike saved by Bertaud.

Antoine Batisse: Scored a powerful header to Carducci's right and was very stout defensively.
