This policy explains what personal information TrueNorthFoot collects, why we collect it,
how we protect it, and the choices you have. It applies to truenorthfoot.ca, including
member accounts and article comments.
Who we are
TrueNorthFoot has covered Canadian soccer since January 2019. A key source of information for fans, players, and staff from clubs around the country, TrueNorthFoot provides coverage on the Canadian Premier League, Canada's three Major League Soccer clubs, the Northern Super League, the national teams, the Premier Soccer Leagues Canada, the Canadian Championship, and more.
Founded by a fan passionate about the local sport, TrueNorthFoot operates as a non-profit initiative driven purely by our love for the game.
Our goal is simple: to become the leading independent source for Canadian soccer coverage. With over 10,000 followers across our social media platforms, we are well on our way.
What we collect
For everyone (regardless of if you have an account):
- Your IP address and the article you viewed, to count article views.
- A small cookie storing your time zone, so match times show in your local time.
If you create an account:
- Email address: to log in, confirm your account, and send account emails such as confirmation links. It is never shown publicly.
- Username: shown publicly next to your comments and on your profile.
- Password: stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form that cannot be turned back into your password.
- Badge: the club or competition you choose to display, shown publicly.
- Account dates: when you joined, last logged in, and last changed your username.
If you sign up or log in with Google: Google shares your Google account ID, email address
and name with us. We store the ID and email to recognize you. Your name is only used to suggest a
username and is not stored. We never receive your Google password.
When you take part in comments:
- Your comments and replies, and when you posted them. These are public.
- Your likes and dislikes on comments. The totals are public; who voted is not.
- Reports you send about comments, which only moderators can see.
Why we use it
- To run your account and let you comment, reply, vote and customize your profile.
- To keep the site safe: preventing spam, abuse and unauthorized access, and moderating comments.
- To count article views and understand which content readers find useful.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising profiles.
Who we share it with
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
Your information is stored on servers located in the United States.
How long we keep it
- Account information: until you delete your account.
- Comments: until you delete them. If you delete your account, your comments stay on articles shown as "[deleted member]", no longer linked to you.
- Deleted comments: the text is erased immediately.
- Likes and dislikes: removed when you delete your account.
- Confirmation and reset links: expire after 24 hours or less.
- Article view records (IP addresses): forever.
Cookies
- Session cookie: keeps you logged in. It is required for accounts to work and is deleted when your session ends.
- Time zone cookie: shows match times in your local time. It expires after a few hours.
How we protect it
The site uses HTTPS encryption. Passwords are hashed, confirmation and reset links are stored
in scrambled form and expire, and forms are protected against forged requests.
Your rights and choices
- See and correct: your account settings show your information, and you can change your username, badge and password there.
- Delete: you can delete your account at any time from your account settings. You can also delete any of your comments.
- Access: you can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Withdraw consent: you can stop using your account and delete it at any time.
To make a request, contact info@truenorthfoot.ca. We will answer within 30 days.
Age
You must be at least 14 years old to create an account. If we learn that an account
belongs to someone younger, we will delete it.
