2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup draw revealed
BY TRUENORTHFOOT PUBLISHED ON DECEMBER 14, 2023

The 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup draw was held on Wednesday, December 13, and with that, the 3 participating Canadian clubs had their rivals revealed.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Tigres UANL (Mexico)
Forge FC vs. C.D. Guadalajara (Mexico)
Cavalry FC vs. Orlando City (USA)

Without further ado, let's take a look at the opponents:

Tigres UANL (Mexico) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

The Whitecaps will take on Tigres for the 2nd time in 2 years, having faced them this 2023 in the Leagues Cup Round of 32, where they were defeated by the Mexicans 5-3 on penalties. The 'Caps also faced them in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals, but were also defeated, with the aggregate score being 4-1 in favour of the Mexican side.

Tigres are currently in the Liga MX final, with the first leg being played later tonight. They've won the Champions Cup just once (2020), finishing 2nd in 3 different occasions.

Los Tigres have already faced another Canadian team in the past: Toronto FC. Both have played each other 3 times, with The Reds knocking the Mexicans out of the 2018 Champions League, only for them to get revenge just 6 months later when they defeated TFC 3-1 in the Campeones Cup final at BMO Field.

C.D. Guadalajara (Mexico) vs. Forge FC

Forge is in for its biggest challenge since taking on Cruz Azul at the Azteca just under 2 years ago. The 4-time CPL champions will be facing Chivas de Guadalajara, who are 12-time Liga MX champions and 2-time Champions League winners.

Chivas have only faced 1 Canadian team in their history: Toronto FC in the 2018 final in which they won.

In the present, the Rojiblancos aren't in their best form. They finished 5th in the Liga MX Apertura standings, which for their standards isn't good. Their Apertura season ended in the quarter-finals after being defeated by Pumas.

Forge will visit Estadio Akron this February in hopes of shocking the world.

Orlando City (USA) vs. Cavalry FC

Cavalry has been drawn with MLS side Orlando City and will be making the trip to Disney World. It will be the first time in history that a CPL side takes on an American club in an official match.

Arguably the least complicated matchup compared to Vancouver and Forge, the Cavs will be hopeful to shock Orlando and advance to the round of 16.

This will be Orlando City's 2nd appearance in the Champions Cup, with their last one being this year. The Lions secured the 2nd position in the 2023 MLS Supporters' Shield standings but were eliminated by the eventual MLS Cup champions, the Columbus Crew.

It's very likely that just like Cavalry, Orlando don't have any official matches before the 1st leg, unless MLS decides to start the season even earlier than usual.

When and where will the games be played?

CONCACAF has yet to announce the dates, times & locations, though they'll likely be revealed this week.

The round one schedule spans from February 6 to February 29, so we can't speculate the weekend in which the matches will be played, as it can vary for different match-ups. Regarding the locations, it's very likely that Forge and Vancouver will play at their homes: Tim Hortons Field and BC Place respectively. The Hammers hosted Cruz Azul at The Donut Box back in February 2022 and had no issues with the weather or the snow. Cavalry on the other hand have confirmed that the location hasn't been defined yet, leaving us to speculate if ATCO Field will be able to host a match in February. According to some users on CPL-related forums, the Cavs have asked to play as latest as possible as to try and avoid the typical cold weather that Calgary is used to.
