Curaçao 0 – 2 Canada: Recap
BY TRUENORTHFOOT PUBLISHED ON MARCH 26, 2023
Canada secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their 3rd group stage match of the CONCACAF Nations League.

Canada used a back-3 formation with Derek Cornelius on the left, Steven Vitória in the center, and Scott Kennedy on the right. Alphonso Davies and Richie Laryea played as wingbacks, while Jonathan Osorio, Stephen Eustáquio, and Ismaël Koné played in midfield. Cyle Larin and Jonathan David were the two forwards up front.

Canada started the match well and took the lead in the 23rd minute thanks to a goal from Jonathan David, assisted by Richie Laryea after a low cross from the right flank. Curaçao's task was made even more difficult when Jurien Gaari received his second yellow card of the match in the 37th minute, reducing them to ten men.

Canada took advantage of the extra man and doubled their lead just before halftime, with Cyle Larin scoring after a pass from Jonathan David near the middle of the box.

The second half was relatively uneventful, with Canada controlling the match and seeing out the victory. Coach John Herdman praised his team's performance, stating that it was a "really professional performance from the lads". He also acknowledged the difficulty of playing in Curaçao, saying that it was a "motivated Curaçao team in a difficult pitch".

Canada made several substitutions in the second half, with Charles-Andres Brym replacing Cyle Larin and Sam Adekugbe coming on for Alphonso Davies in the 64th minute. Mark-Anthony Kaye replaced Ismaël Koné, and Atiba Hutchinson replaced Stephen Eustáquio in the 70th minute. Tajon Buchanan, who recently returned from a hamstring injury in a Club Brugge match, replaced Jonathan David in the 78th minute.

With the victory, Canada assured themselves a top-2 finish in their Nations League group, which means they have qualified for the 2023 Gold Cup. Their next match is on March 28 at BMO Field in Toronto, where they'll face Honduras. A draw or a win is enough for Canada to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.
