LANGLEY, August 11 2024 Vancouver FC vs. Pacific FC
Weather: Sunny 25 degrees
Recap: Vancouver FC 1, Pacific FC 0
We’re at the stage of the season where every game is a must win, but this game had the potential of determining the fate of the Vancouver FC season.
At kickoff, the teams were tied for 5th place with 20 points, with Pacific having a game in hand. In the last four Salish Sea derbies, Vancouver walked away with the win. They desperately needed the streak to continue as they were winless in their last five games. Going into this game, Pacific was winless in their last four.
As one might expect with so much on the line, the game started off as being overly cautious, with both teams content on keeping position of the ball along the back line and making quick attacks into their opponent’s defensive area.
Giveaways by the Vancouver defence continue to be a problem, providing Pacific with no less than three good scoring opportunities in the first half. Vancouver’s best chance in the half came in the 44th minutes, as a Renan Garcia free-kick from thirty five meters went past the visitor's wall and was headed for the right corner were it not for a diving save by Emil Gazdov.
Alejandro 'Wero' Díaz scored the only goal in Sunday’s game in the 62nd minute, converting a beautiful cross from the right wing by Paris Gee.
The Vancouver goal appeared to ignite the Pacific offence, and in a span of ten minutes, they had three excellent scoring opportunities but were unable to convert on them
Alejandro Díaz and James Cameron were named to the Canadian Premier League’s Team of the Week for Week 18. Vancouver’s next home game will be on Sunday, August 18, 2024 against Forge FC.
