RECAP: Cavalry FC earns an important road win

Vancouver FC vs. Cavalry FC
Weather: Sunny, 25 degrees

Recap: Vancouver FC 0, Cavalry FC 1

The game started out like a game between a team with nine draws this season and a team that has only won two games since May 25th, with the ball being played along the back line of both teams rather than pushing forward and taking the initiative.

While Cavalry has struggled to win games this year, they have lost a league-low three games and conceded only fourteen goals in sixteen matches.

A defensive miscue by Vancouver FC led to the only goal of the game by Mael Henry in the 23rd minute, as he tapped in a low cross into the unguarded Vancouver goal. Sloppiness along the back line has been a common issue with the hosts' defence this season.

Henry almost scored his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute with a swinging shot from outside of the box that was just pushed aside by Vancouver goalkeeper Callum Irving. On the ensuing corner, Sergio Camargo was left alone on the edge of the goal and had an opportunity to increase the lead.

The absence of Moses Dyer is hampering Vancouver’s ability to attack, while the addition of Olivier Rommens has added more creativity to the midfield. It will be interesting to see if the Rommens/Dyer combination adds some spark to the Vancouver attack.

Two of the next three games for Vancouver FC are against teams below them in the standings, and these are now must-win games.

Vancouver’s next game is in Halifax against the Wanderers on August 5, while Cavalry next plays in the nation's capital against Atlético Ottawa on August 3.
