It was the first game for new signing Belgian midfielder, Olivier Rommens, who last played for Balzan FC of the Maltese Premier League. Olivier’s experience and playmaking was evident, and he will likely be a valuable asset for the second year Vancouver team.
The hosts needed a strong showing after their loss to Atlético Ottawa to gain some momentum during this stretch of home games.
Both teams opened the game cautiously, with York United relying on long through balls down the right side for most of their attacking opportunities. The half ended 0 – 0.
York opened the scoring in the 46th minute with a powerful header from Syrian forward Molham Babouli on a cross from the right wing by Max Ferrari. In the 48th minute, Alejandro Díaz had a glorious opportunity to equalize from 6 metres, but his weak shot was easily stopped by Thomas Vincensini.
In the 93rd minute, Vancouver equalized when Alejandro Díaz converted a low cross, giving Vancouver a much needed point.
Vancouver’s next game is at home against Cavalry FC on July 26th.
With both teams fighting for the top 3 spots, this will be a crucial match.
