Looking to make it two wins in a row at home.

Jesper Sørensen's Vancouver Whitecaps resume their 2026 Major League Soccer campaign, as they perhaps face their toughest test yet in league play, taking on Eastern Conference high-flyers New York City FC.

Here's everything you need to know.

How the Vancouver Whitecaps come into the match

It was a thrilling home win in Vancouver’s latest match, as they defeated rivals Portland Timbers FC 3-2 dramatically, scoring twice in stoppage time.

Now sitting second in the Western Conference, the Whitecaps have gone from strength to strength since their standout 2025 season and are aiming to push for major silverware this year.

How New York City come into the match

Under Pascal Jansen, New York has made a strong start to its MLS campaign, sitting second in the Eastern Conference with a 3-2-1 record, with its only loss coming in a tight 3-2 defeat to Inter Miami.

The last match was less convincing, as New York settled for a 1-1 draw against St. Louis City SC, conceding a late equalizer to Brendan McSorley after Hannes Wolf had given the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Head-to-head

The last meeting between these two sides came in 2023, ending in a 1-1 draw at Yankee Stadium. Monsef Bakrar gave New York the lead in the 55th minute before a Ryan Gauld penalty leveled the match five minutes later.

The last time they met at BC Place was Vancouver’s home opener in 2022, a 0-0 draw in which New York dominated but could not find a way past Thomas Hasal.

Overall, the head-to-head has been led by the East Coast side, which has won three of the seven meetings, while the Whitecaps have one victory, with the other three ending in draws.

Vancouver’s lone win over New York came back in 2017, a dramatic 3-2 victory with goals from Fredy Montero, Jordan Harvey, and Yordy Reyna after Maxime Chanot and David Villa had scored for the visitors.

New York’s biggest win followed in 2019, a 3-1 result at BC Place. Héber and Gary Mackay-Steven scored for the visitors, while Yordy Reyna’s consolation was overshadowed by a stunning free kick from Alexandru Mitriță.

Players to watch

You can’t spell the Vancouver Whitecaps without this man, as the club’s second all-time leading scorer looks to get back among the goals. Brian White has five goals this season, all in MLS play, but hasn’t scored in his last three matches across all competitions. Still, he has gone through dry spells before bouncing back, so there’s little reason for concern. Tomorrow presents a good opportunity for White to return to the scoresheet as he continues to chase Domenic Mobilio on the club’s all-time scoring list.

New York has found real value in one of its newer Designated Players. Nicolás Fernández Mercau joined the club in the summer of 2025 from Elche CF and recorded five goals and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions. This season has been a breakout so far, as with star striker Alonso Martínez sidelined by an ACL injury, Fernández Mercau has already matched last year’s goal total in just six matches. His goals have come in a variety of ways, from poacher’s finishes to impressive free kicks, and the number seven has the quality to trouble the Whitecaps’ defence.

Availability

For the Whitecaps, Sam Adekugbe, Ryan Gauld, Belal Halbouni, Ralph Priso, and Ranko Veselinović all remain out, despite Adekugbe, Gauld, and Veselinović nearing returns but not yet ready. Sebastian Schonlau has also picked up a hamstring strain and is back on the injured list. Andrés Cubas, however, has recovered from his adductor injury and is available, a major boost for Vancouver.

For New York, Drew Baiera, Malachi Jones, Alonso Martínez, Max Murray, and Andrés Perea are all sidelined with leg injuries, while captain Thiago Martins is questionable with a leg issue.

TrueNorthFoot projects 2 changes for Vancouver through preference and 1 change for New York, which is forced due to injury.
