The Vancouver Whitecaps are back to winning ways after an emphatic comeback victory over the Portland Timbers, keeping them in second place in the MLS Western Conference.

Jesper Sørensen made five changes from the side defeated by San Jose just before the international break, with Tate Johnson, Mathías Laborda, Jeevan Badwal, Sebastian Berhalter, and Thomas Müller all coming into the eleven. Mihail Gherasimencov, Oliver Larraz, and Emmanuel Sabbi dropped to the bench, while Ralph Priso was ruled out with a hamstring injury, with Bruno Caicedo replacing the newly capped CanMNT defender.

The game started perfectly for the Whitecaps, as a brilliant long ball from Yohei Takaoka found fullback Édier Ocampo, who rolled it into an empty net after rounding Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis, who made a complete mess of the situation.

After half-chances for Aziel Jackson and Brian White, Thomas Müller headed the ball perfectly into the path of Cheikh Sabaly, but the Senegalese international could only fire his close-range effort straight at Pantemis.

Portland leveled when a failed Whitecaps clearance fell to Juan Mosquera, who struck an absolute rocket on his return from injury and season debut.

The Timbers' best chance until that point came in the 40th minute, as a Kristoffer Velde cross found an unmarked Kevin Kelsy, only for Yohei Takaoka to produce a fine save to keep the scores level.

Portland then took a shock lead just before the break, as a bad error from Mathías Laborda allowed Juan Mosquera to find Designated Player David Da Costa, who dinked it over Takaoka to make it 2-1.

The second half began with changes for both sides, with Emmanuel Sabbi replacing Aziel Jackson for the hosts and Brandon Bye coming on for Mosquera at Portland. Vancouver came close to equalizing when Jeevan Badwal threaded a perfect ball to Sabbi, but Pantemis denied the American winger to preserve Portland's lead.

Laborda picked up a yellow card in the 68th minute for bringing down David Da Costa, who went down rather easily.

Sørensen made his second change of the night with 19 minutes remaining, bringing on Ecuadorian winger Bruno Caicedo for Cheikh Sabaly on his Whitecaps debut. He immediately caught the eye with his bursts of pace and dribbling, though his first effort from distance was comfortably saved by Pantemis.

Three minutes after coming on, Portland's Diego Chará was booked for a foul on Emmanuel Sabbi, entering the record books as the player with the most yellow cards in MLS history, surpassing Kyle Beckerman.

Vancouver's final change came in the 82nd minute, with Jeevan Badwal replaced by Rayan Elloumi, who recently made his debut for the Tunisian national team.

The decisive moment arrived in the 89th minute. From a Sebastian Berhalter corner, the Timbers' clearance fell to Édier Ocampo, whose volley was blocked by Antony using his arm, and referee Joe Dickerson pointed to the spot. Thomas Müller stepped up and slammed the penalty down the middle to level things up deep in stoppage time.

Deep into the five added minutes, a great sliding challenge from Sebastian Berhalter set up one final chance. Tate Johnson's crossfield pass found Emmanuel Sabbi, whose left-footed effort was blocked, but the ball dropped to Berhalter, who struck a perfectly placed finish past Pantemis to give Vancouver the lead with almost no time remaining.

Moments later, Bruno Caicedo came inches away from a debut goal, only to drag his shot wide in a one-on-one situation, but it mattered little as the Whitecaps held on to snap a two-game losing skid.

Vancouver return to action next week, hosting Eastern Conference high flyers New York City FC at BC Place. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm PT / 7:30 pm ET in what shapes up to be a stern test for Sørensen's side.
