VAN Vancouver 0 FT 3 CRU Cruz Azul

Vancouver FC fell 3-0 to Cruz Azul in the club's historic Concacaf Champions Cup debut.

The Eagles had six debutants in the starting line-up, with Morey Doner, Damiano Pecile, Luis Toomey, Mohamed Amissi, Marcello Polisi, and Tom Field all making their first appearances for Vancouver.

As expected, the visitors had little trouble throughout most of the match, controlling possession and creating the better chances.

The opening 10 minutes were fairly even, with the only opportunity in that period coming from Vancouver’s Marcello Polisi, whose headed effort went wide.

After that, it was all Cruz Azul, as they suffocated the Eagles just outside their box.

The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute, when a shot was blocked inside the area but fell to Gabriel Fernández, whose effort took a slight deflection off José Paradela, who was credited with the goal.

The Mexicans doubled their lead through Amaury Morales, who pounced on the loose ball after Callum Irving's save to tuck it past the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Thierno Bah found one of Vancouver's best chances of the match, working himself into space close to goal from a tight angle before firing into the side netting.

Cruz Azul continued to dominate, and it paid off in the 66th minute when Agustín Palavecino found himself one-on-one with Callum Irving and slotted the ball past the Vancouver keeper to put the game — and the tie — to bed.

The Eagles had their first real chance on goal in the 71st minute when Nicolás Mezquida sent a cross into the box that found Mohamed Amissi, who got a touch on the ball before Emmanuel Ochoa denied him. As Cruz Azul attempted to clear, the ball fell to Kian Proctor, who had practically an open net but fired wide with a hurried effort.

Minutes later, David Norman Jr. nearly scored one of the goals of the tournament with an acrobatic bicycle kick that was saved by the Cruz Azul goalkeeper.

Vancouver's triple substitution minutes earlier, which saw Nicolá Mezquida, Kian Proctor, and David Norman Jr. enter the pitch, had given the hosts real momentum, and they'd practically dominated since the fresh legs came on.

In the 76th minute, Thierno Bah was fouled inside the box, and referee Jose Torres pointed to the spot. After a quick VAR check, though, the referee decided there was no foul and overturned his original call.

Cruz Azul had a final chance in the dying minutes, sending a shot just over the bar.

Up next for the Eagles is the return leg in Mexico next week (Thursday, February 12, 8:00 pm ET / 5:00 pm PT), where they'll be looking to turn the impossible into possible.

Cruz Azul are back in league play on Saturday, visiting reigning Mexican champions Toluca.
