The Vancouver Whitecaps have been excellent so far in this 2026 campaign, but the hardest test so far arrives tomorrow at BC Place.

After dispatching C.S. Cartaginés by an aggregate score of 2-0 in the opening round, Jesper Sørensen's side takes on the Seattle Sounders in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.

For Vancouver

It's a great time to be a Vancouver Whitecaps fan in terms of on-field success. The club has won four of their opening five games and are yet to taste defeat in 2026.

In their most recent match, the 'Caps made quick work of the Portland Timbers in a 4-1 win at Providence Park on Saturday, with Brian White scoring twice as Sebastian Berhalter and Tristan Blackmon added the other goals in that large win.

After qualifying for the Champions Cup as a top side in the MLS Supporters Shield table and winning the 2025 Canadian Championship, the Whitecaps took on C.S. Cartaginés. After a 0-0 draw in Costa Rica, goals from Kenji Cabrera and Sebastian Berhalter sealed their spot in the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win at BC Place.

For Seattle

Brian Schmetzer's Sounders have made a solid start to the 2026 MLS season, picking up two wins from their opening three games alongside one defeat.

Their most recent outing came on Saturday, a 1-0 victory over St. Louis City SC sealed by a second-half strike from Kalani Rienzi.

Seattle head into the knockout rounds with a first-round bye already secured, having automatically qualified for the Round of 16 as 2025 Leagues Cup winners.

Head-to-Head

The last meeting between Vancouver and Seattle came on September 27th of last year, a pulsating 2-2 draw in which Jackson Ragen and Albert Rusnák got on the scoresheet for the Sounders, while Brian White and Mathías Laborda replied for the 'Caps, a result that sealed Vancouver's eighth Cascadia Cup.

The last time the two sides met at BC Place Stadium was June 8th, where a heavily rotated Whitecaps side dismantled Seattle 3-0, with Jeevan Badwal and Daniel Ríos both scoring from open play before Damir Kreilach added a third from the penalty spot.

Like Portland, Seattle shares a rich rivalry with Vancouver. Across 55 all-time meetings, the Sounders hold the upper hand with 24 wins to the Whitecaps' 15, with 16 draws in between, per Transfermarkt.

Vancouver's biggest victory in the fixture came in 2013, a 4-1 win at Lumen Field, with Kekuta Manneh becoming the first player in club history to score an MLS hat trick. Seattle's largest margin came in 2022, also at Lumen Field, where they ran out 4-0 winners.

Players to watch

Sebastián Berhalter is a firm fan favourite at BC Place, and it's easy to see why. Initially acquired from the Columbus Crew in the 2022 offseason for around $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) — with a further $50,000 tied to performance incentives — Berhalter gradually made his mark during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Deployed primarily in central midfield but capable of shifting to right wingback, he became Vanni Sartini's Swiss Army knife, impressing with his versatility and eye for a long-range effort. Yet even after a promising 2024 campaign, few could have anticipated what 2025 had in store. Appearing in 47 games across three competitions, the American racked up 8 goals and 13 assists from midfield, earned his first USMNT call-up, and announced himself on the international stage with a stunning free kick against Uruguay. The momentum has carried into 2026, with Berhalter already contributing 2 goals and an assist in five games as he builds his case for a place in Mauricio Pochettino's World Cup squad. The Whitecaps will be leaning on his magic when derby day arrives.

From one American midfielder to another, Cristian Roldán has spent his entire career with the Seattle Sounders and remains one of their most important players as he enters his 12th season at the club. The 30-year-old has been a cornerstone of Brian Schmetzer's midfield, collecting two MLS Cups, a Champions Cup, and last year's Leagues Cup along the way. A USMNT regular since 2017 with 43 caps to his name, Roldán is equally motivated by World Cup ambitions heading into this pivotal year. He's already opened his account in 2026, netting in Seattle's 2-1 defeat to Real Salt Lake, and has played every minute of the Sounders' season so far, a run that looks set to continue across both legs against Vancouver. If Roldán hits his stride, Seattle will fancy their chances of getting the better of the 'Caps.

Player availability

For Vancouver, Sam Adekugbe, Ryan Gauld, Belal Halbouni, Sebastián Schönlau, and Ranko Veselinović all remain sidelined through injury, while Andrés Cubas is suspended after accumulating yellow cards. Cheikh Sabaly is expected to be available, though Bruno Caicedo is working his way back to fitness and looks unlikely to feature.

Seattle head into the tie with their own injury concerns. Pedro de la Vega, Stuart Hawkins, Kim Kee-hee, Jordan Morris, and Ryan Sailor are all expected to remain unavailable, while newly signed midfielder Hassani Dotson has been ruled out after entering concussion protocol. Yeimar Gómez Andrade is also set to miss out after picking up an injury in the first half against St. Louis, leaving the Sounders stretched at centre-back. Georgi Minoungou and Paul Rothrock had both been listed as questionable, though Minoungou came off the bench in the win over St. Louis as an unused substitute.
