The Vancouver Whitecaps head into the FIFA World Cup break in style, as Jesper Sørensen’s side earned an impressive 4-2 victory over San Diego FC despite several key absences.

Jesper Sørensen made two changes from the side that fell to the Houston Dynamo, as Isaac Boehmer replaced the suspended Yohei Takaoka, while Aziel Jackson came into the lineup for Oliver Larraz. That adjustment pushed Jeevan Badwal deeper into a defensive midfield role, while Jackson and Kenji Cabrera operated on the wings.

On the bench, Andrés Cubas and Cheikh Sabaly were unavailable through suspension and injury, respectively, but there was positive news elsewhere. Nikola Djordjevic, Ralph Priso, and Sebastian Schonlau all returned to the squad after recovering from injury. Adrían Zendejas was also added to the bench due to Takaoka’s suspension.

The Whitecaps started brightly and created the first real chance of the evening when Aziel Jackson tested CJ Dos Santos from distance.

Sebastian Berhalter then delivered a dangerous set piece that Brian White headed wide, but the American striker would not waste his next opportunity.

A brilliant long ball from Tristan Blackmon found Thomas Müller, whose composed square pass allowed Brian White to slot home the opener in the 30th minute.

Vancouver doubled its lead just before halftime. After Kenji Cabrera delivered a cross into the box, Jeevan Badwal’s first touch perfectly teed up White, who finished clinically for his second of the night.

Following three minutes of stoppage time, referee Drew Fischer brought the opening half to a close with the Whitecaps firmly in control.

San Diego responded after the break.

Brian White received the game’s first yellow card early in the second half before the hosts pulled one back through David Vazquez, who finished from distance after being found by Anders Dreyer.

Moments later, San Diego nearly equalized as Luca Bombino’s cross found Marcus Ingvartsen unmarked, but the Danish striker headed wide from close range.

Just after the hour mark, Sørensen introduced Bruno Caicedo for Aziel Jackson, who may have played his final match for the club with his loan deal set to expire on June 30.

The substitution paid off almost immediately.

After Jeevan Badwal won possession brilliantly in midfield, Thomas Müller slipped the ball through to Brian White, who unselfishly squared it for Bruno Caicedo to tap home Vancouver’s third of the evening.

Things quickly worsened for San Diego when Luca Bombino brought down Édier Ocampo and received his second yellow card of the match, reducing the hosts to ten men.

Ralph Priso then made his long-awaited return from injury, replacing Kenji Cabrera, with Badwal shifting into a more advanced role.

Priso made an immediate impact.

Following a short corner routine involving Thomas Müller, Brian White directed a header toward goal, but Priso poked the ball over the line to guarantee Vancouver’s fourth goal, denying White a hat-trick in the process. The pair shared a laugh afterward as the Whitecaps took complete control.

Vancouver nearly added a fifth moments later when Priso’s through ball released Jeevan Badwal, but CJ Dos Santos made an excellent save to deny the young midfielder.

With six minutes remaining, Sørensen introduced Nikola Djordjevic, Rayan Elloumi, and Mihail Gherasimencov in place of Badwal, White, and Tate Johnson.

The Whitecaps continued creating chances, with Mathías Laborda sliding a Sebastian Berhalter set piece wide before Oscar Verhoeven picked up another booking for San Diego after fouling Mihail Gherasimencov.

After six minutes of stoppage time were added, Anders Dreyer set up Bryan Zamblé to score San Diego’s second goal following a difficult moment for Isaac Boehmer.

Bruno Caicedo received Vancouver’s final yellow card shortly afterward, while Rayan Elloumi nearly added another late goal, only to be denied by Dos Santos.

That would be the final action of the night, as the Whitecaps head into the break sitting atop the MLS Western Conference with a game in hand over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Next up for Vancouver will be the first leg of the Canadian Championship quarter-finals, where they will face Cavalry FC at Swangard Stadium on July 8th, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm PT.
