A monumental match awaits the Whitecaps and Earthquakes.
Jesper Sørensen and the Vancouver Whitecaps return to action as their eight-match road trip continues in California, with PayPal Park set to host tomorrow’s clash against the San Jose Earthquakes.
With major implications at the top of the Major League Soccer standings, the Whitecaps need a win in this one.
Here’s everything you need to know heading into tomorrow’s match.
How the San Jose Earthquakes enter this match
In a nervy afternoon out east, the Earthquakes grabbed a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC in a match that could have gone either way.
With a game in hand, the San Jose Earthquakes find themselves in an unprecedented first place after 11 matchweeks, with just one loss recorded this season.
Bruce Arena has gotten the best out of a limited squad, but it faces a huge test tomorrow at home.
How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this match
The Vancouver Whitecaps picked up the same result in their match, as a late Mathías Laborda goal secured a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Whitecaps have won eight of their first 10 league matches this season, with their only defeat coming against this same opposition at home.
Jesper Sørensen has gone from strength to strength in his second season in charge of the Whitecaps, and a positive result tomorrow would heavily favour the Canadian side.
Head-to-Head
These two sides have already met in this young 2026 MLS season, with the last meeting on March 21 seeing the Earthquakes claim a controversial 1-0 win, as Beau Leroux’s first-half stunner proved to be the difference.
Across 39 matches, the series narrowly favours Vancouver, with 14 wins and 12 draws, while San Jose has claimed 13 victories, including the most recent meeting.
San Jose’s biggest win in the fixture came in 2020, a 3-0 victory at PayPal Park, with goals from Cristian Espinoza, Andrés Ríos and Paul Marie after both Andy Rose and Érik Godoy were shown red cards.
Vancouver’s largest win came in the 2017 playoff meeting, a 5-0 rout of the Earthquakes at a packed BC Place. Fredy Montero, Cristian Techera and Kendall Waston all scored before substitute Nicolás Mezquida netted a two-minute brace to secure the club’s first-ever MLS playoff win.
Players to watch
An unprecedented rise that nobody could have predicted heading into the new MLS season, San Jose has gotten the best out of 26-year-old striker Preston Judd, with the American enjoying the best Major League Soccer campaign of his career. Judd has scored seven goals and recorded two assists in 11 matches, while also starting every game so far. Having scored against the Whitecaps last year, the striker will be looking to do it again and continue raising his stock.
Vancouver also has its own prolific American striker in Brian White, as the New Jersey native is once again enjoying a fruitful campaign. White has recorded eight goals in 10 MLS matches so far this season, while also becoming the club’s second all-time leading scorer after his goal against Toronto FC. While he has been hot and cold in some matches, White is extremely dangerous when in form, and he will look to continue building his potential World Cup stock despite the odds being stacked against him. Still, never say never.

For the Earthquakes, star German Timo Werner and breakthrough midfielder Niko Tsakiris are set to miss the match, with both potentially sidelined for the remaining MLS games before the league breaks for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Vítor Costa, Earl Edwards Jr. and DeJuan Jones will also miss this match, with Jones suffering an Achilles tendon injury against the Whitecaps that has effectively ended his 2026 season.
For the Whitecaps, Sam Adekugbe, Ryan Gauld, Belal Halbouni, Ralph Priso and Sebastian Schonlau will remain out for Jesper Sørensen. Thomas Müller could also miss the game, as he is listed as questionable due to an illness that kept him out in Los Angeles.
