It’s another hard-fought road point for the Vancouver Whitecaps, as they earned a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Jesper Sørensen made just one change to the side that drew 1-1 against the Los Angeles Galaxy, as Bruno Caicedo came in for Emmanuel Sabbi, with Cheikh Sabaly shifting over to the left wing following the Ecuadorian’s inclusion. With Thomas Müller still out due to illness, J.C. Ngando remained on the bench.

The match kicked off, and it was a dream start for the Earthquakes. A quick attack allowed Preston Judd to fire past Yohei Takaoka following a cross from Paul Marie.

Vancouver dominated possession, but San Jose’s compact defence forced the visitors into ambitious efforts from distance. Ronaldo Vieira was booked in the 25th minute, marking the first yellow card of the match.

The Whitecaps created a decent opportunity in the 28th minute when Cheikh Sabaly headed the ball down for Jeevan Badwal, but the homegrown midfielder was denied by Daniel, who closed him down quickly to prevent a proper shot.

Both Benji Kikanović and Daniel were booked in the 36th minute after the former brought down Bruno Caicedo near the byline.

After two additional minutes, referee Malik Badawi blew for halftime, with Vancouver trailing by a goal and needing a response in the second half.

Emmanuel Sabbi was introduced at the start of the second half, replacing Cheikh Sabaly, who once again endured a difficult outing for the Whitecaps.

After Sebastian Berhalter was booked for a late foul, Vancouver created its best chance of the match when the ball broke loose inside the box, but Jeevan Badwal was once again denied by Daniel in a moment where the midfielder likely should have done better.

Badwal was eventually replaced by Peruvian U-22 Initiative player Kenji Cabrera, who came on in the central attacking midfield role after showing promise against the Galaxy last week. Later on, Aziel Jackson was introduced in place of Bruno Caicedo, who was kept relatively quiet by a strong defensive performance from Benji Kikanović.

Following sustained pressure and a deflected Emmanuel Sabbi shot, the ball fell kindly to Sebastian Berhalter, who fired home from close range to give Vancouver a deserved equalizer.

After Jack Skahan was booked in the 79th minute, neither side created many major opportunities, even with seven minutes of stoppage time added after the 90.

Malik Badawi brought the match to an end after stoppage time expired, marking a second consecutive road draw for the Whitecaps. Not bad, but not great either, as they remain in second place.

The Vancouver Whitecaps return to action on Wednesday when they face FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in the first of two matches that week in Texas. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PT.
