The Canadian Premier League rumbles on as every team battles for position in the table.

As a curiosity, a total of 16 yellow cards and one red card were issued over the weekend. If you like scrappy football, there was plenty of it.

The games:

Friday saw two matches: Wanderers vs. Supra and Vancouver vs. Cavalry. With one game taking place in Halifax and the other in Langley, they were almost as far apart as they could be.

The showdown between Halifax and Supra was a rollercoaster of emotions. Halifax looked to be cruising at halftime with a 2-0 lead, but two penalties and a goal from open play meant that by the 77th minute, Supra had taken the lead, with Loïc Kwemi completing his hat-trick.

A proper "smash-and-grab" win, then, and a tough pill for the Wanderers to swallow.

Out west, Vancouver made history by beating Cavalry, something that had previously eluded them in regular-season play. A red card for Cavalry did not prevent the Cavs from playing attacking football in the second half, but their efforts came to nothing. Despite not being local rivals, matches between these two have often carried plenty of intensity, and Martin Nash earning a yellow card did nothing to dispel that feeling.

Sunday's action saw Pacific travel to TD Place to face Atlético Ottawa.

I've talked before about Pacific continuing to score while continuing not to win games despite it. Pacific came out swinging after trailing 1-0 at halftime, first equalizing from the penalty spot and then taking a 2-1 lead through Bustos.

If hopes were high, they did not remain so for long. Ballou Tabla equalized for Ottawa, and Pacific's hopes of taking at least a point from TD Place were dashed in stoppage time as Ottawa scored again to claim a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, Inter Toronto and Forge FC locked horns at York Lions Stadium. A late first-half goal from Ampomah was cancelled out by Skublak, leaving the game tied 1-1 at halftime. As the second half wore on, however, Forge's style of play gradually took over, and the final whistle confirmed a 3-1 victory, with Toronto managing just eight shots throughout the match.

The standings and next games:

Pacific (8th)

At the time of writing, Pacific have scored 15 goals, five times as many as their three points. Their opponents have scored 30, 10 times as many as Pacific's point total. That's probably not optimal.

What I will say is that there are still hardcore fans who show up for every home game. Kudos.

On Friday, the team hosts Supra. It would be a fine thing to pick up at least a point and give the supporters something to cheer about.

Inter Toronto (7th)

Inter Toronto's fortunes continue to slip, as does their position. At this point, the playoff spots are seven points away, which is a long road to climb. Next up are second-place Cavalry on Saturday.

Still, the Cavs have not been invincible, and a scrappy Toronto side could make things difficult.

Supra du Québec (6th)

Supra have found some momentum after their battle with Halifax. Six points separate them from the playoff spots, and they now have a chance to close that gap with away matches against Cavalry on Tuesday and Pacific on Friday.

They'll need to channel their inner road warriors.

Halifax Wanderers (5th)

Despite a spirited performance, the Wanderers remain where they started the weekend. The good news is they have until Sunday to regroup. The bad news is that Forge are coming to town, and getting results against them has been difficult.

Vancouver FC (4th)

I said Vancouver had a knack for frustrating Cavalry, and it turns out they did. The Eagles now enjoy a four-point cushion over Halifax and sit just one point behind Ottawa.

As fate would have it, Ottawa are their next opponents. It couldn't set up much better.

Atlético Ottawa (3rd)

To stay in the playoff picture, Ottawa cannot afford to give away points. They'll no doubt have studied this weekend's action as they prepare to face Vancouver in Langley. Their position is slightly more comfortable, as even a draw would keep them ahead of the Eagles, but only just.

Cavalry (2nd)

The gap to Forge has grown, while the gap to Ottawa has narrowed, albeit only slightly. The Cavs now have an opportunity to create some breathing room with matches against Supra on Tuesday and Inter Toronto on Saturday.

Forge (1st)

The number of goals Forge have conceded this season is equal to the number of current teams in the Canadian Premier League.

The presumed Shield winners travel to Halifax next.
