Halifax Wanderers striker Tiago Coimbra is off to Sweden’s IFK Göteborg after both clubs reached an agreement.
The Swedish side finished 4th out of 16 teams in 2025, narrowly missing out on qualification for European competitions.
While the transfer fee has not been formally disclosed, TrueNorthFoot understands the deal is worth roughly $375,000 USD, including a signing bonus, with the Wanderers retaining a sell-on percentage — making it a deal just north of $500,000 CAD. HFX Football Post first reported this information.
Coimbra’s contract with his new club runs until the summer of 2029.
The forward moves to Europe after a fantastic season with Halifax in the Canadian Premier League, where he scored 13 goals and registered three assists in 23 appearances across all competitions. He was named the CPL’s Best Canadian U-21 Player of the Year and was also a finalist for the Players’ Player of the Year award.
He capped off the season with his first-ever call-up to the Canadian men’s national team, making his debut in a 1–0 victory over Guatemala in what was officially marked as a “B” friendly.
The 22-year-old joined the Wanderers in 2023, going on to make 64 appearances across three seasons, scoring 20 goals and adding five assists.
Coimbra now joins a league that already features two former Canadian Premier League players in Matteo de Brienne and Sam Salter, both of whom play for GAIS, Göteborg’s city rivals. His new side finished just a few points away from European qualification last season.
Halifax are left with players like Jason Bahamboula and Tavio Ciccarelli as attacking options, though Coimbra’s departure will leave a significant gap up front.
