It’s a second league loss of the 2026 season for Jesper Sørensen’s Vancouver Whitecaps, as a late goal gave the Houston Dynamo a 1-0 victory over the Canadian side. The result also meant all three Canadian MLS clubs lost in Matchweek 14, following CF Montréal’s 2-0 defeat to the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC’s 3-1 loss to Charlotte FC.

Jesper Sørensen made three changes to the side that defeated FC Dallas midweek, as Oliver Larraz replaced Andrés Cubas in midfield, Thomas Müller came in for the injured Emmanuel Sabbi, and Kenji Cabrera was handed his first league start of the season in place of Cheikh Sabaly.

The match began with an immediate chance for Vancouver, as Brian White slipped the ball through to Édier Ocampo, but the Colombian struck the post.

In the 11th minute, Kenji Cabrera received the first of several yellow cards shown to Whitecaps players.

Vancouver then thought it had opened the scoring when a Sebastian Berhalter effort was deflected toward goal by Brian White, but the offside flag came up in what was a very tight decision.

During a Vancouver corner, defender Tristan Blackmon challenged Dynamo midfielder Diadié Samassékou in the air, with the Malian midfielder going down after being knocked unconscious in the collision.

A 12-minute delay followed as an ambulance entered the field to transport Samassékou to the hospital. Agustín Bouzat replaced him after the frightening scenes, though the good news is that Samassékou was later confirmed to have left the hospital and returned home.

Following the restart, Houston began to create more danger, with Guilherme testing Yohei Takaoka through a low curling effort that the Japanese goalkeeper handled comfortably.

During that sequence, Oliver Larraz suffered a hip injury and immediately went down. Andrés Cubas replaced the American midfielder, with Jesper Sørensen later stating that Larraz had not yet been ruled out for next week’s match, though his availability would depend on his recovery.

Due to the lengthy stoppage surrounding Samassékou’s injury, 14 minutes of added time were played at the end of the first half. Tate Johnson was booked during stoppage time before Ismail Elfath blew for halftime.

The second half began without changes from either side.

Édier Ocampo was booked just three minutes after the restart, while Agustín Resch became Houston’s lone booking six minutes later.

Andrés Cubas then received a yellow card in the 62nd minute, meaning the Paraguayan midfielder will miss Vancouver’s next match through suspension due to yellow card accumulation.

The Whitecaps were then hit with a nightmare moment as Mateusz Bogusz broke down the left wing and was brought down by Yohei Takaoka, resulting in the goalkeeper being sent off. The 30-year-old certainly put himself in a difficult position and likely should not have come so far off his line.

Isaac Boehmer entered the match in place of Kenji Cabrera, while Tate Johnson was also withdrawn for Mihail Gherasimencov.

Houston thought it had taken the lead in the 69th minute when Ezequiel Ponce scored after Isaac Boehmer spilled a Mateusz Bogusz shot, but the offside flag spared the Whitecaps.

Thomas Müller nearly produced a moment of magic two minutes later, driving a powerful effort toward the bottom-right corner before Jonathan Bond denied him with a strong save.

Houston then looked certain to score on a counterattack following a Whitecaps corner, as Guilherme went one-on-one with Isaac Boehmer while Mihail Gherasimencov chased him down, but Boehmer came up with a massive save to keep the score level.

With 13 minutes remaining, Jesper Sørensen made a double substitution as Ranko Veselinović replaced Édier Ocampo and Aziel Jackson came on for Thomas Müller.

Jeevan Badwal was later replaced by Rayan Elloumi with five minutes left to play.

Despite being down to 10 men, the Whitecaps defended relatively well heading into seven minutes of stoppage time.

Houston eventually found its breakthrough as Artur played a short corner to Guilherme, whose shot took a slight deflection off Brian White. Isaac Boehmer failed to deal with it cleanly, and the ball trickled over the line for the winner.

Brian White had one final opportunity from a Sebastian Berhalter cross, but the striker could not hit the target before Ismail Elfath blew for full-time.

While it is a difficult defeat to accept, the Whitecaps remain atop the Western Conference standings following San Jose’s 3-2 loss to FC Dallas.

Nashville SC will face LAFC on Sunday, with a victory for the Eastern Conference seeing them knock Vancouver off the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings.

With Yohei Takaoka, Andrés Cubas and Oliver Larraz all set to join the Whitecaps’ growing list of absences following the events against Houston, the next challenge will be difficult, though far from impossible.

Next up for Vancouver is a trip back to California, where the Whitecaps will look to bounce back against San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium before MLS pauses for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT / 9:30 p.m. ET.
