Less than a month after a scoreless draw at Gillette Stadium on July 22, it will be no secret that both Toronto FC and the New England Revolution will be looking to make amends for their listless play in Foxborough. The only question that remains to be answered at BMO Field this weekend is whether either team can seize the opportunity and claim the spoils.
Tactically, Revolution manager Marko Mitrović strives to have his team play on the front foot with a flexible, possession-heavy structure that allows them to control the match tempo and create consistent goal-scoring opportunities while maintaining a solid defensive foundation.
The primary focus of the attack comes from play down either flank, followed by central players flooding the final third with numbers to finish their chances. In particular, New England are hoping for big things from newcomer Jack Harrison. The veteran English winger returns to MLS after nine years away, having split last season between Leeds in the Premier League and Fiorentina in Serie A. The key for the Revolution remains crafty midfielder Carles Gil, who also excels from set pieces.

Defensively, the Revolution favour a high press supported by a mid-block that forces their opponents out wide while looking for turnovers to spring their attack. Their back line is well organized by veteran US national team goalkeeper Matt Turner.
Despite their offensively tilted style of play, the Revolution's goal output remains mediocre, with just 28 goals scored through 18 games. However, their defence has been above average, with 23 goals conceded — tied for second-best in the Eastern Conference.
New England's current form
The Revolution will be the favourites over Toronto, but should they be? New England are going through a bit of a rough patch of late, with just one win in their last five matches. Across this stretch are a scoreless draw with Toronto and a 2-2 draw with Montréal after blowing a 2-0 first-half lead. New England followed that performance with a 2-0 home loss to Houston last weekend — perhaps their worst performance of the year against a team not named Nashville.
However, New England still has 30 points, which remains good enough for third place in MLS's Eastern Conference.

The story of Toronto FC's 2026 campaign is getting long and repetitive, but not in a positive way. Toronto's last winning season, the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, seems a long way off in the rear-view mirror. Their treble-winning 2017 season is now nine years ago.
Currently, the Reds are mired in a 12-game winless run stretching back to their last victory on April 4 against Colorado. The attack has yet to find chemistry or any sustained success despite the new signings. While the team has shown some defensive resilience of late, the all-important wins have been elusive.
Despite some significant roster turnover this season, including the acquisitions of Dániel Sallói and Josh Sargent to complement last year's marquee signing, Đorđe Mihailović, it is safe to say that greater things were expected of the squad, despite some early-season injury challenges.

Toronto FC will be looking for a boost from new signing Niklas Dorsch, the former Bundesliga midfielder most recently with Heidenheim, who will be making his home debut for his new club. Yet the biggest challenge confronting Toronto remains getting its attack back on track.
Toronto's current form
The Reds have earned three draws on the road since MLS returned after the World Cup hiatus, which under better circumstances would not appear so bad. The positive is that TFC have conceded just three times in those four games. But they have unfortunately only scored twice in the same stretch. The last time Toronto scored more than once in a match was their 4-2 defeat to Inter Miami on 9 May 2026.
Disappointingly, after 18 matches played, the team has a goal difference of -8 and sits in 12th place in the Eastern Conference. With just 17 points, Toronto remain six points back from a play-in spot. Unfortunately, time is rapidly running out for head coach Robin Fraser's squad to salvage their season.
Player availability
The New England Revolution have Leonardo Campana, Ilay Feingold, and Luca Langoni all listed as out with lower-body injuries. Andrew Farrell is also listed as doubtful with a lower-body injury.
Toronto's injury issues continue to improve, with just four players out for the match against New England. Missing will be Nicksoen Gomis (thigh), Deandre Kerr (lower body), captain Jonathan Osorio (knee), and Nelson Palacio. The latter, a new summer signing, has yet to debut for Toronto as the club indicates he requires reconditioning.
