The Whitecaps made history in Torreón on Wednesday, knocking Liga MX giants Monterrey out of the Champions Cup and moving on to the quarter-finals after a 2-2 draw (3-3 on aggregate, Vancouver win on away goals).
Vancouver opted for a back five, featuring Edier Ocampo, Ranko Veselinovic, Tristan Blackmon, Belal Halbouni, and Tate Johnson in front of goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer.
Jesper Sørensen adjusted the midfield to a two-man setup with Sebastian Berhalter and Andrés Cubas, while the attacking trio consisted of Ali Ahmed, Daniel Ríos, and Pedro Vite.
Monterrey grabbed an early lead through Spanish winger Sergio Canales, who controlled the ball on the right side of the box, slipped past Tate Johnson, and fired past Isaac Boehmer.
The Whitecaps pushed forward in the second half, repeatedly getting the ball into dangerous areas but struggling to create clear shooting chances.
Their breakthrough finally came minutes later, as Edier Ocampo leveled the score with a perfectly placed low-driven shot into the bottom left corner.
Vancouver maintained control in the second half, frequently getting the ball into the box.
Ali Ahmed stood out during this stretch, repeatedly using his pace to trouble Monterrey's defense.
Then, in the 78th minute, Brian White scored to put Vancouver ahead in the tie, getting the so-important away goal.
In the final minute of the game, Monterrey was awarded a controversial penalty, with Sergio Ramos converting.
Despite the referee going way past the added time, Vancouver got things done, securing their spot in the quarter-finals, where the winner of Pumas vs. Alajuelense awaits.
