The highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash between Cavalry and Forge did not disappoint.
A pair of goals and a sending-off inside the final ten minutes resulted in the league's title contenders sharing points in their final meeting of the regular season.
The Hammers opted for their usual back four: Marko Jevremovic, Antoine Batisse, Dan Nimick, and Rezart Rama. Ben Paton and Manjrekar James linked up at the defensive midfield, with Hoce Massunda, Aghilas Sadek, and Maxime Bourgeois rounding out the third level. This left Ismael Oketokoun as the lone high attacker, hoping that the young Spaniard could score his second goal of the season away to the Cavs.
Making his return to the starting XI for Forge for the first time since 2023, James would go on to play an impactful 73 minutes, managing two shots and drawing a pair of fouls.
Alongside James, Sadek continued his growing presence in the Forge midfield, drawing five fouls and providing critical support to Forge's transition tactics.
Cavalry countered with a similar 4-2-3-1 formation, with Bradley Kamdem Fewo, Amer Didic, Daan Klomp, and Adam Pearlman making up the back four. Eryk Kobza and Harry Paton paired up in the second level, with Nathaniel Edwards, Tobias Warschewski, and Sergio Camargo forming an attacking third layer. As in the last several matches, Caniggia Elva was positioned as the lone high attacker.
In his 100th match with the club, Eryk Kobza played to his second consecutive 90-minute effort for Cavalry. The 24-year-old midfielder seems to have reclaimed his starting role after failing to surpass the 60-minute threshold all but two times since the CPL's midseason break in June.
Bradley Kamdem Fewo managed 83 minutes for Cavalry after requiring treatment on two separate occasions throughout the afternoon. The defender was impactful despite his fitness concerns, managing a key block in the second half and adding much-needed dynamism to Cavalry's defensive breakouts.
Contrary to the hype entering the weekend, the first half progressed slowly. The league's two top offences stagnated, combining for a mere 0.32 expected goals, and only required the league's top goalkeepers to make three routine saves. Harry Paton and Hoce Massunda both picked up yellow cards in the opening 45.
The hosts held the edge in possession, but sloppy passing from both sides and 14 fouls sent the Shield hopefuls to the locker rooms with no goals after 45 minutes.
Forge enjoyed a significant share of momentum throughout the opening hour of play. To respond, Cavalry brought in Goteh Ntignee and Ali Musse in the 57th minute, hoping to find a go-ahead marker.
As tensions rose, a trio of yellows to Camargo, James, and Warschewski prompted Forge to make a triple substitution in the 73rd minute. Brian Wright, Tristan Borges, and Lucas Cavallini all came in for Smyrniotis' side, signalling an all-out effort for a late winner.
At the same time, Owen Antoniuk was brought in for Cavalry.
Forge would find their breakthrough in the 80th minute after taking advantage of a disastrous defensive breakdown from Cavalry. A woeful clearance attempt from Pearlman landed directly on the boot of Jensen, who powered the ball past a helpless Nathan Ingham.

Seeming like they would secure the three points and pull within striking distance of Cavalry at the head of the Shield race, Forge's tactics shifted slightly toward a defensive focus.
As the minutes wound down, Cavalry were awarded a free kick near centre. Warschewski stepped up to the ball and delivered a masterfully weighted attempt deep into Dimitry Bertaud's crease. Amer Didic was able to meet the effort and chip the ball to a completely unmarked Antoniuk, who made no mistake and levelled the match in the 90th minute.

This is the second time in six weeks that Antoniuk has scored a late marker against Forge. The young Calgarian has solidified himself as an integral part of Cavalry's offence and has quickly become a fan favourite among Cavalry supporters. When asked after the match, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. praised Antoniuk's instincts and natural ability to seek out scoring opportunities.
As Cavalry were celebrating their equalizer, Warschewski received his second yellow of the afternoon, forcing the German to head to the locker room early.
With only stoppage time remaining, both sides battled back and forth, hoping to influence the result for their clubs. As the whistle blew for the final time, the Cavs would see relief in their salvation of a single point, with momentum going against the home side for the vast majority of the final hour of play.
Forge players and staff were clearly unsatisfied with the single point, given the context of the Shield race and the sense that their efforts were worthy of victory.
Nonetheless, the result upholds the four-point gap in the standings between the two sides, with each team having six games remaining in their regular-season schedules.
Forge will continue their road trip and take on Vancouver FC one last time in regular-season play on Saturday, September 26.
Cavalry will remain at home and welcome FC Supra for their final meeting of the season on Friday, September 25.
