The CANWNT ended their 2026 SheBelieves Cup campaign in New Jersey with a penalty shootout victory over Argentina, bringing their final point total to a respectable 5 points.
Casey Stoney opted for a 4-4-2 formation after primarily utilizing a 4-2-3-1 in the games against Colombia and the USA.
Kailen Sheridan remained in goal behind a back four of Janine Sonis, Brooklyn Courtnall, Jade Rose, and Marie Levasseur, with Sonis shifted to left back.
Courtnall and Levasseur both made their first starts of the competition.
In midfield, Simi Awujo and captain Jessie Fleming started in the central roles, with debutant Kaylee Hunter operating on the right wing and Jordyn Huitema given the left-wing role.
The two strikers were Notre Dame forward Annabelle Chukwu and Ottawa Rapid forward DB Pridham, both of whom made their first starts for the senior side.
Canada came out on the front foot immediately, with Chukwu sliding the ball through to Sonis, only for her cross to be blocked by Argentina goalkeeper Solana Pereyra.
In the 11th minute, a wayward Jessie Fleming pass allowed Sofía Domínguez to strike at goal, but her effort went straight into Sheridan's hands for a comfortable save.
Sheridan was called upon again in the 35th minute, this time punching away a swinging Domínguez free kick.
Canada came close in the 39th minute, as Jordyn Huitema received a flick from DB Pridham, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Pereyra to keep the score level.
Catalina Ongaro was shown a yellow card in stoppage time, and the match remained goalless heading into the break.
The second half began with a triple change, as Sydney Collins, Julia Grosso, and Vanessa Gilles came on for Marie Levasseur, Simi Awujo, and Jade Rose.
Canada came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 48th minute, as Chukwu held up the ball before her deflected pass found the head of teenager Hunter, only for her effort to roll wide for a goal kick.
A Jessie Fleming set piece in the 57th minute found the head of Vanessa Gilles, but she could only direct it well wide of the goal.
Casey Stoney made a change on the hour mark, with DB Pridham making way for Roma's Évelyne Viens.
Viens made her presence felt just seven minutes later, pouncing on a loose pass and firing towards goal, though Pereyra made a comfortable stop.
After Cloé Lacasse and Holly Ward entered the match in the 79th and 86th minutes for Annabelle Chukwu and Kaylee Hunter, respectively, Fleming played a perfectly weighted ball into Lacasse's path. The Utah Royals forward skipped past Adriana Sachs, only for her strike to be blocked by Sophia Braun before Argentina cleared their lines.
Daiana Falfán was shown a yellow card in the 83rd minute for a foul on Kaylee Hunter.
After three minutes of stoppage time, referee Alyssa Pennington brought the 90 minutes to a close, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Argentina captain Aldana Cometti stepped up first, but a poorly struck effort was saved by Kailen Sheridan. Jordyn Huitema went first for Canada, only to be denied by Solana Pereyra.
Sheridan came up huge once more, producing a wonderful save to her left to deny Sophia Braun and keep the shootout scoreless at that stage. Captain Jessie Fleming then stepped up and fired a brilliant strike past Pereyra, who guessed correctly but couldn't keep it out.
Agostina Holzheier finally beat Sheridan, finding the top left corner to level the shootout. Set-piece specialist Janine Sonis then converted with composure, sending Pereyra the wrong way to put Canada back in front.
Agustina Vargas responded with a similar effort to Sonis', placing her penalty into the bottom right corner with Sheridan guessing wrong. Julia Grosso took Canada's fourth kick and slotted it home despite Pereyra getting a hand to it.
Vanina Preininger would be given the decisive 5th penalty for Argentina, but her penalty sailed miles over the bar, alas ending the shootout and giving Canada the extra point at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

While the result confirmed the United States winning the SheBelieves Cup for a record eighth time, it was a positive ending for Canada, who came into the tournament on the back of a disappointing five-game losing streak.
Canada finished with five points and a respectable second-place finish, as the USA clinched the title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Colombia, courtesy of an Alyssa Thompson goal in the 82nd minute.
