It’s back-to-back wins for Jesper Sørensen and his Vancouver Whitecaps as they defeat New York City FC 2-0.
Sørensen opted for a single change from the side that beat the Portland Timbers in a thrilling 3-2 score, with Andrés Cubas returning from injury and replacing Aziel Jackson, Jeevan Badwal shifting to the right-hand side, and Cheikh Sabaly deployed on the left.
Pascal Jansen was forced into a single change due to injury, with Raul Gustavo sliding in at center-back for club captain Thiago Martins.
Vancouver got on the front foot immediately, with a neat chipped pass from Tristan Blackmon finding Jeevan Badwal, who crossed for Brian White in the box. The striker headed wide before taking a heavy fall shortly after making contact.
The hosts were given a scare not long after, as a loose pass from Édier Ocampo allowed Nicolás Fernández Mercau to get a foot on the ball after Takaoka had got a touch, with the effort rolling agonizingly wide of the post, a glorious opportunity for the visitors to take the lead.
Vancouver's next chance came on the half-hour mark, when Sebastian Berhalter's corner found Brian White, whose header went straight into the hands of Matt Freese. Three minutes later, Cheikh Sabaly laid it off for Berhalter, who stabbed his effort just over the bar.
Right after, Thomas Müller found a pocket of space and fed it through to Brian White, with his powerful effort not troubling Freese.
Brian White was once again at the end of a big chance, as some great dribbling from Jeevan Badwal allowed the Canadian to deliver a cross into the striker. White’s powerful header, however, was hit straight at Matt Freese, who reacted well to deny Vancouver the opener.
After Tayvon Gray fouled White, Sebastian Berhalter delivered the resulting free kick, finding Mathías Laborda, who beat Freese with a karate-style finish to give the Whitecaps the lead after several chances.

With no stoppage time added, the first half ended, and the second began without changes, ending a run of three straight matches in which Jesper Sørensen had made a halftime substitution.
Thomas Müller had an early opportunity after Tate Johnson found the German following a clever dummy from Cheikh Sabaly, but his low effort from distance was saved by Freese.
Sabaly then reached the byline and cut the ball back for Berhalter, whose shot from a tight angle was also kept out by Freese.
After a heavy challenge, Andrés Cubas was booked, giving NYCFC a free kick in a dangerous area, but Nicolás Fernández Mercau sent his effort over the bar.
Following a half chance for Aiden O’Neill, Vancouver made a double substitution, with Bruno Caicedo and Emmanuel Sabbi replacing Sabaly and Cubas, the latter having put in a strong performance.
After Oliver Larraz came on for Berhalter, Vancouver pushed forward again, with Édier Ocampo finding White. Despite having passing options, the striker went for goal and was once more denied by Freese.
Larraz was booked in the 80th minute for stopping a NYCFC attack.
Müller then won possession in midfield, sending White through on goal with Caicedo as an option, but the striker again chose to shoot, and his effort went straight into Freese’s hands.
Late on, Caicedo received the ball and beat Gray before delivering a superb cross for White, who finally got the better of Freese, guiding a diving header low into the net to seal the win. The goal also marked the club’s 700th in MLS regular season play.

Yohei Takaoka made a couple of late saves, though neither posed significant difficulty.
During two minutes of stoppage time, Rayan Elloumi came on to replace White and help see out the match.
Jair Marrufo brought the game to a close, and with LAFC also losing to the Portland Timbers, the result lifted the Whitecaps to the top of both the Western Conference and the Supporters’ Shield standings as they chase the trophy for the first time.
Jeevan Badwal stood out as the Man of the Match, with an energetic performance on the right wing and in defensive midfield that highlighted his continued rise, one that could earn him a Canadian men’s national team call-up after the World Cup.
The Whitecaps return home on Friday to host a struggling Sporting Kansas City, with kickoff set for 7:30 pm PT / 10:30 pm ET.
