Time for another edition of this famous rivalry!

Major League Soccer returns to action following a two-week break due to the start of the 2026 Leagues Cup competition, as the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field tomorrow night.

Here's everything you need to know heading into tomorrow's game.

How the Seattle Sounders enter this match

For the Sounders, it's been a terrible time, as they currently have one win in nine games, with that win coming in their second Leagues Cup match against Querétaro FC.

In their most recent match, Seattle were defeated 2-1 by Chivas de Guadalajara after taking the lead just 13 minutes in before losing it on the hour mark.

For Brian Schmetzer's side, this result has put them all the way down to ninth place in the Western Conference. Can Seattle turn it around against a rival they've already defeated twice this season, especially with the visitors also struggling for form?

How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this game

For the Whitecaps, they have also gone through a difficult patch, losing three of their last seven games while drawing their other four.

Their most recent outing wasn't that bad compared to their previous results, as the already-eliminated Vancouver grabbed a 1-1 draw in Mexico against Tigres UANL before falling short after a thrilling penalty shootout.

For Jesper Sørensen's side, this poor run of form hasn't cost them just yet, as they remain at the top of the Western Conference, but it's a bit tighter as they are level on points with LAFC, given that the Whitecaps have two games in hand. The 'Caps also find themselves six points behind Supporters' Shield leaders Nashville SC, which is a blow considering Vancouver was at the top for part of the season. Can they turn around their fortunes against an out-of-form rival?

Head-to-head

These two sides met in the Concacaf Champions Cup this year during the Round of 16 stage, with the Sounders grabbing a 3-0 win at BC Place Stadium before dispatching the Whitecaps in Spokane by a 2-1 scoreline to advance.

In the 57 meetings between these two sides, Seattle holds the lead with 26 wins and 16 draws, while Vancouver has recorded 15 wins.

This will be the first clash between the two sides at Lumen Field since September of last year, as goals from Jackson Ragen and Albert Rusnák were cancelled out by a Brian White opener and an emphatic equalizer from Mathías Laborda, as the Whitecaps clinched the Cascadia Cup with a 2-2 draw.

Vancouver will only need a draw to clinch a second straight Cascadia Cup, as it would be their ninth cup of this historic rivalry, which would be two more than second-place Seattle.

Players to watch

Today's theme is centred around goalkeepers, and Seattle has one for any sort of cup action, while the other goes through the league season. Currently, the league goalkeeper is 27-year-old Russian-born British-American Andrew Thomas. Born in Moscow to an American father but later moving to England at a young age, Thomas has slowly taken the number one role for the Sounders from Stefan Frei, and so far this season, he's turned some heads. With five clean sheets in 17 games while conceding 22 goals, Thomas has earned a career-high in starts this season while exclusively playing in MLS action. Projected to start tomorrow, this will be Thomas' first-ever appearance against the Vancouver Whitecaps, so this will be interesting for both sides.

Vancouver's number one is set to reclaim his starting spot after receiving some rest in the Leagues Cup. 30-year-old Japanese shot-stopper Yohei Takaoka comes into this game after not playing in any games over the past couple of weeks, but that shouldn't affect him too much after he received three starts in MLS action following the end of the World Cup break. Takaoka has recorded six clean sheets while conceding 14 goals in one fewer appearance than Thomas, although he did receive a red card against the Houston Dynamo, which explains the one fewer game. Takaoka has proven himself before for Vancouver, but tomorrow, he's going to have to be on top of his game as the Whitecaps look to snap this terrible run of form.

Availability

For Seattle, Paul Arriola, Hassani Dotson, Yeimar Gómez Andrade, Jordan Morris, and Nikola Petković are all unavailable, while Pedro de la Vega has been ruled out for the season following a quad injury sustained against Querétaro FC. Cristian Roldán enters this match as questionable with a quad injury.

For Vancouver, Kenji Cabrera, Bruno Caicedo, Belal Halbouni, Kwasi Poku, and Ranko Veselinović remain out due to injuries, while Brian White will not be available for the Whitecaps as he remains out with hamstring tightness. Liam Mackenzie is good to go following the end of the Concacaf U20 Championship, while new signing Aleksa Cvetković will not be ready yet due to visa paperwork.
