Four-time defending champions Vancouver Whitecaps will begin their 2026 Voyageurs Cup campaign against high-flying Cavalry on Wednesday at Swangard Stadium.
The first match of a two-legged tie will allow both sides to gain an advantage and move one step closer to the next round, and ultimately a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The domestic cup history between these two sides could not be much closer. The Whitecaps and Cavalry have met in three previous editions of the tournament, with Cavalry's historic advancement in 2019, and the Whitecaps advancing on penalties in 2022 and on away goals in 2024. Now, with the away goals rule removed, the two sides will once again battle over 180 minutes in the fourth chapter of a legendary domestic rivalry.
Considering the recent form of both clubs, this fixture is shaping up to be one of the highlights of Canadian soccer in a year that already feels transformational.
How the Vancouver Whitecaps come into the match
Due to venue availability and other scheduling considerations, the higher-ranked Whitecaps will host the first leg but will not feel entirely at home, as the match will be played at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Regardless, the squad will be eager to return to action, having not played since a 4-2 victory over San Diego on May 23.
The Whitecaps have enjoyed an excellent start to the MLS season, sitting first in the Western Conference with a 10-2-2 record. The Caps own a league-best +22 goal differential and have scored 34 goals through 14 matches, good for the third-most in the league.
By virtue of being the top-ranked team and defending champions, the Caps did not feature in the preliminary round of this year's tournament.
How Cavalry FC come into the match
Cavalry have also not seen much action over the last six weeks, but most recently put together dominant victories over reigning CPL champions Atlético Ottawa last Saturday and a struggling Inter Toronto side last month.
The Cavs sit second in the CPL table with an 8-2-1 record, with their only loss coming against perennial contender and bitter rival Forge FC at the end of May. Like the Caps, Cavalry boast the best goal differential in their league at +17 and have scored 25 goals through 12 matches across all competitions in 2026.
Cavalry qualified for the quarter-finals of this year's tournament thanks to a 3-1 road victory over Pacific back in May.
Availability
Before the MLS break, Vancouver Whitecaps were faced with several injuries. Ryan Gauld was sidelined with a knee injury but is expected to be match-ready now that the MLS break is coming to a close. Cheikh Sabaly and Oliver Larraz had minor injuries that forced them to miss their match against San Diego in May, but both are expected to be available on Wednesday. Vancouver are expecting Ralph Priso, Rayan Elloumi, and Andrés Cubas back from their respective national teams, but the latter is not expected to draw into the lineup.
Cavalry will be without Tobias Warschewski, as per the CPL.
Players to watch
Vancouver Whitecaps: Mihail Gherasimencov. The 21-year-old Moldovan spent all of 2025 on loan with Cavalry, where he made 30 appearances and scored two goals. The left-back has made six appearances for the Whitecaps' first team so far in 2026 and will look to use this domestic cup tie against his former club to build momentum and earn more playing time for the remainder of the season.
Cavalry FC: Daan Klomp. The Flying Dutchman returned to Cavalry following his brief stint in Europe for matches like these. Klomp has consistently delivered in big moments during his time with the club, and Wednesday's quarter-final presents another opportunity for him to step up when his team needs him most.
Projected XIs
