Stade Saputo should be in for a treat.

It's been a minute since a true big-name superstar has sported the bleu-blanc-noir colours in front of the crowd in Montréal, but Alexis Sánchez is in line to make his home debut on Saturday as the LA Galaxy come to town.

The Impact are coming off an important win against Columbus on Wednesday, where a Noah Streit golazo kept their slim playoff hopes alive, and will be hoping to turn that into a winning streak this weekend.

While these two cross-conference foes do not play each other particularly often, you'd have to go back a decade to find the last Montréal victory over the six-time MLS champs. LA has won the last four meetings by a combined 9-1 scoreline, the latest of which was a 4-0 drubbing in California in July of 2022.

The last time Montréal came out victorious in this fixture? May 2016, when a Didier Drogba 90th-minute winner pushed the Impact to a 3-2 victory.

The home fans will hope Sánchez, the club's biggest name since Drogba, can provide some similar heroics this weekend.

How Montréal enter the match

The Impact very much needed a victory, and winning in fairly convincing fashion on the road in Columbus was exactly what the doctor ordered for a side that had gone eight matches winless in league play.

Other than a pretty comical Thomas Gillier own goal, Philippe Eullaffroy's side was very solid defensively against former Montréal manager Laurent Courtois and the Crew, and were rewarded after having the better of the chances with Streit's thunderous strike from way out in the 78th minute that proved to be the match-winner.

Now unbeaten in three, vibes have definitely shifted positively as the calendar has flipped to August. It started with an improbable 2-0 comeback against New England, then into the Sánchez signing, then hit a small roadblock with a dominant but disappointing draw against D.C., and hit another high with the midweek win.

But Montréal still sit 14th in the East, and four points back of the ninth and final playoff spot. They'll need to turn a few weeks of good vibes into a legitimate run for the remaining 14 games of the season if they want to taste postseason action once again.

How LA Galaxy enter the match

While the global star in focus in this match will be Sánchez, the Galaxy host a bevy of known commodities on their roster as well.

German legend Marco Reus headlines that group, with the former Borussia Dortmund star now in his third MLS season. He runs the show in attacking midfield for this group that also features some new signings such as on-loan Mexican star Chucky Lozano and former Celtic man Kyōgo Furuhashi, as well as former Southampton centre-back Maya Yoshida.

Still, with all that star power, the Galaxy sit outside of the playoff spots in the Western Conference. It's been another rocky season for Greg Vanney's side, who've gone through a ton of squad turnover from the team that won the 2024 MLS Cup.

Injuries and turnover marred the first half of the year, with star midfielder Riqui Puig's second-straight ACL tear, after rehabbing the first one, keeping him out for a second full season, which put the team behind the eight ball from the get-go.

They rehauled what was a brutal defence in 2025, bringing in MLS veterans Jakob Glesnes and Justin Haak to reinforce and stabilize the defence. That hasn't really worked, and the midfield ball progression without Puig has continued to be a big area of concern.

In attack, designated player attackers Joseph Paintsil and João Klauss have missed some time due to injury, and haven't been too dominant when on the pitch. LA also sold DP and leading scorer Gabriel Pec to Brazilian side Cruzeiro this summer, which is what kicked off another phase in the rebuild.

In all, it's been a season of inconsistency and incoherence in LA once again. Like Montréal, they too ended a long winless skid on Wednesday, snapping a six-game slide in the Cali Clásico over San Jose, despite being down a man the entire second half.

Sitting 10th in the West and two points back of that final playoff spot, they too will be looking to start a winning streak to salvage their season.

Availability

Montréal was without Frankie Amaya, Wiki Carmona, Bode Hidalgo and Efrain Morales against Columbus, and with the quick turnaround to the weekend's games, it seems pretty unlikely any of them will be available for any meaningful minutes this weekend.

The Galaxy will see Emiro Garcés return from red card suspension this weekend, but will lose Lucas Sanabria for a red card of his own in the midweek. On the injury front, they'll be without the aforementioned Puig, as well as Klauss and Elijah Wynder.

Projected XIs

TrueNorthFoot projects an unchanged Montréal lineup from Wednesday, while the Galaxy will replace the suspended Sanabria with Isaiah Parente in midfield.

On the Sánchez front, Eullaffroy suggested to the gathered press he's potentially fit enough to play about 30 minutes off the bench. Game state may come into play with that one, but the Chilean star should be expected to make his home debut at some point in the second half.

CF Montréal (4-3-3): Thomas Gillier; Luca Petrasso, Brayan Vera, Jalen Neal, Dawid Bugaj; Fabian Herbers, Matty Longstaff, Dani Pereira; Noah Streit, Prince Owusu, Hennadiy Synchuk

LA Galaxy (4-2-3-1): JT Marcinkowski; Julián Aude, Maya Yoshida, Jakob Glesnes, Harbor Miller; Justin Haak, Isaiah Parente; Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano, Marco Reus, Joseph Paintsil; Kyōgo Furuhashi
