It may not be expansion, but it's a step closer to bringing a Canadian Premier League club to the province of Quebec.
Earlier on Monday, the league invited media to a "special" announcement in Québec City, set for Wednesday, April 2.
The event will feature commissioner Mark Noonan, Québec City Mayor Bruno Marchand, Université Laval Athletic Director Julie Dionne, and representatives from the league, its clubs, and the local soccer community.
Speculation quickly began among fans, with many hoping for the long-awaited Quebec expansion team.
That won’t be the case just yet. According to La Presse, the announcement will reveal that a Canadian Premier League regular season match will be held at Université Laval as part of the league’s new “On Tour” series, designed to test the market for a potential expansion club.
The two teams and the date of the match will be confirmed in Wednesday’s announcement.

This wouldn’t be the first time a regular-season match is played on neutral ground.
Last year, Vancouver FC and Cavalry took part in the league’s first-ever “On Tour” match in Kelowna, BC, drawing an impressive 6,281 fans. The game ended in a goalless draw.
The British Columbia city has long been rumored as a potential Canadian Premier League expansion site. Earlier in February, Wanderers Notebook reported that Kelowna is a strong contender to be one of the league’s two expansion clubs for the 2026 season.
