Historic night for Forge FC and the Canadian Premier League - especially for the day 1 players and staff who have now won it all 🏆 A major reset is needed at CF Montreal - a dark day on the losing side of things. #CFMTL #CanPL #CanChamp

One more thing: Forge became champions of Canada with 7 Canadian players in the starting 11 (plus 7 more on the bench) 🇨🇦 To compare: Montreal had the CanChamp-minimum 3 Canadians in the lineup, 7 total in the squad. None of their Canadian players took a penalty.

It had to be them. Only fitting that #ForgeFC would the first CPL team to win the Canadian Championship. What Bobby has built there is nothing short of remarkable. #CanChamp #CanPL

Forge took advantage of a previous quote by Prince Owusu after qualifying to the final with a dig.

A completely different mood in the Montréal stand, where fans threw flares onto the pitch as Manjrekar James slotted his game-winning penalty.

#CFMTL https://t.co/BpSgQRJaR1

CF Montreal fans said it would be "unacceptable" to lose to Forge FC in the Canadian Championship final. They were none too pleased when that became reality, with some entering the pitch 😳 https://t.co/rjd7Rd4i0w #CFMTL | #ForgeFC | #CanChamp https://t.co/NBrhkMqu7T

Confusion arose when DP Alexis Sánchez and Samsy Keita were to come on for the final few minutes and the inevitable penalty shootout, and according to interim head coach Phillipe Eullaffroy, he had "run out of time" to make the substitution.

Did Sánchez refuse to come on?

#ForgeFC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis says he was "a little surprised" that #CFMTL didn't involve Alexis Sanchez tonight. Adds that Forge still drilled for the scenario(s) and how to counter his play, had Sanchez come off the bench. #CanChamp
