$50,000 in General Allocation Money with an additional $50,000 in performance incentives. That was the package that sent a then-20-year-old Sebastian Berhalter to the Vancouver Whitecaps, as he was traded away from the Columbus Crew, the side that gave him his first contract in professional soccer.
Fast forward to the summer of 2026, and after a FIFA World Cup campaign with the United States that saw him score and assist against Türkiye, Berhalter is joining EFL Championship side Middlesbrough FC for a reported $2,000,000 fee, and that's well under his value; it was either this or the 'Caps would lose Berhalter for nothing.
This still doesn't feel right, as you couldn't predict Berhalter making a move to the Championship after his arrival, and that's not even mentioning his national team career.
The son of former player and now head coach Gregg Berhalter, Sebastian joined the Whitecaps with low expectations surrounding him, as he had just had an alright loan spell with expansion side Austin FC, where he featured 18 times but didn't record a goal or assist.
The first season with Vancouver came and went, as Berhalter made the same number of appearances as his previous year, but was handed six more starts and was given a couple of games in the Canadian Championship, which Vancouver won. It wasn't a great season, as the Whitecaps failed to qualify for the MLS Playoffs.
This is where the rise of Berhalter begins.
2023 provided more games for Berhalter, as he made his Concacaf Champions League (now Champions Cup) debut while being a part of the first edition of Leagues Cup. This was also the year when Berhalter grabbed his first goal contributions in his professional career, recording two goals and four assists across 37 games. The Whitecaps won the Canadian Championship once again and made the MLS Playoffs, where Berhalter only played nine minutes in the first game before being an unused substitute in game two.
2024 was more of the same for Berhalter, except he started to develop some versatility as a right wingback. Berhalter recorded three goals and four assists in 45 games, as the club won its third straight Canadian Championship while also qualifying for the MLS Playoffs. This was also the season when Berhalter became a regular in Vanni Sartini's eleven, starting 27 games.
Now, 2025 was when Berhalter truly started to rise, as no one could've predicted the season he was about to have, not even Sebastian himself.
With Danish head coach Jesper Sørensen taking over for Vanni Sartini, Berhalter blossomed in his 4-3-3 and later 4-2-3-1, as he started 41 out of his 47 appearances and recorded a career-high eight goals and fourteen assists. The club had one of its most successful campaigns as well, finishing as runners-up in both the Concacaf Champions Cup and MLS Cup, while winning a fourth straight Canadian Championship in the process. Berhalter was named VWFC Player of the Year and was named to the MLS Best XI; he also took part in the MLS All-Star Game. This was also a monumental year in terms of the international stage, as Mauricio Pochettino handed him a call-up to the USMNT in May, and Berhalter was also part of the nation's squad for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, where he made five appearances, assisting twice. After that, Berhalter got a big moment in November against Uruguay, as he grabbed a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win. The goal was a beautifully worked set piece, where Berhalter played a one-two with Sergino Dest off a narrow-angled free kick before striking a beautiful shot into the top right corner.
The current 2026 season came, and Berhalter entered this campaign on an expiring deal and had interest from European sides. He also had a point to prove to Mauricio Pochettino, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup was just around the corner. Eighteen games, seven goals, and four assists later, Sebastian did enough to earn a spot in the United States World Cup roster.
It was a campaign where Berhalter was used as a bench player, with him getting minutes towards the end of games, but he did get a start in the USA's final group stage game against Türkiye, and he didn't waste that opportunity. Berhalter recorded a goal and an assist in their 3-2 defeat against the European opposition, and while the result was not ideal for Sebastian and company, this game triggered interest from MLS and European opposition.
After missing the first two games of Vancouver's return to MLS action, it was quite obvious that Berhalter was leaving, and his destination would shortly be announced. EFL Championship side Middlesbrough FC were the winners of the sweepstakes, as the club has acquired the American midfielder on a four-year deal, with the fee being reported at $2,000,000. It's significantly lower than Berhalter's market value, but Axel Schuster and the Whitecaps didn't really have a choice due to his expiring deal.
Berhalter leaves as a club legend for Vancouver, as he was arguably the club's best player in their best period in recent times. The statistics back it up, as his 25 assists rank as the second-highest in the MLS era, only behind club captain Ryan Gauld. His 20 goals put him as the tenth-highest goal scorer in Vancouver's MLS history. Not bad for a central midfielder, you must say.
It's gonna be extremely difficult for Jesper Sørensen's side to replace the huge hole in midfield, as Berhalter was Designated Player quality, while not occupying much in terms of salary. They now have to replace his set-piece taking, his work ethic, and his shooting. Usually, that will require several players for each category; that's how good Berhalter is.
Sebastian Berhalter joins Ali Ahmed as players who have recently transferred from the Whitecaps to a side in the Championship, with the latter finding success in England's second division with Norwich City, so should we expect similar for Berhalter?
Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Berhalter will be dearly missed in Vancouver, both as a player and as a human.
