The Vancouver Whitecaps are back to winning ways, recording a nice 2-1 win over Austin FC at Q2 Stadium!
Vancouver dominated the first half, stamping their attacking authority early through the left side, with Bruno Caicedo and Tate Johnson.
After Brian White saw his header go far away from the goal, a bad error from goalkeeper Brad Stuver would see Vancouver handed a big chance, but Caicedo wasn't able to catch the strike properly, with his right-footed shot sailing over the bar, much to the relief of Austin FC and captain Stuver.
Vancouver kept pushing, and it would be the Ecuadorian getting the next good look for Vancouver: Brian White found the winger in the box, but he couldn't really place his strike, which resulted in an expected save for Brad Stuver.
After Tori Penso missed a big call which would've given Vancouver a dangerous set piece, the 'Caps would self-destruct. A loose back pass from Tate Johnson slid Myrto Uzuni in behind, and the Albanian international made no mistake and put it under the legs of Yohei Takaoka for the opening goal, which came against the run of play due to Austin not registering a single shot until that point.

It was an uncharacteristic error from Johnson. The reliable fullback made a bad decision to make the back pass in the first place and was duly punished by Austin's top scorer across all competitions in 2026.
Tori Penso signalled for halftime after the expiration of stoppage time, with Jesper Sørensen having to encourage his Whitecaps side that had only won once when trailing at the break and had also won once when conceding first.
The second half began, and the 'Caps came out guns blazing, searching for an equalizer right after coming out of the locker room.
Vancouver would only need 65 seconds to make Austin pay for the lack of chances they created: a great cross from Emmanuel Sabbi was headed on by Ryan Gauld, who got it past a diving Brad Stuver.

It was a needed goal for Gauld, who had gone seven games without scoring a goal, and he recorded his fifth goal across all competitions to bring Vancouver level.
It was clear Vancouver needed a spark, and Jesper Sørensen elected to bring a couple of starting eleven-calibre players on, with Ralph Priso replacing the booked Andrés Cubas and Yadaly Diaby replacing Bruno Caicedo, who wasn't great in the second half.
The Guinean international came on immediately; after receiving the ball from Tate Johnson, Diaby showed some skill before curling a blistering strike into the top right corner.

Fans felt like the match was in slo-mo; the strike could only be described as poetry in motion, giving Vancouver a 2-1 lead over Austin.
It was Diaby's second goal for the club after arriving for a reported $1,500,000 fee, and with the two strikes he's had being stunners, it makes sense why Vancouver splashed the cash for the former Grenoble Foot forward.
The previously mentioned Priso had an interesting role to play: after having a career resurgence at the centre-back position, he was tasked with playing in his old midfield position alongside Aleksa Cvetković and later Oliver Larraz. The Canadian didn't look out of place. His passing was very nice to watch, which shouldn't be a surprise for fans after watching his three matches for the Canadian Men's National Team in the recent international window.
Vancouver looked set to score a third goal when Tristan Blackmon's long ball was lashed onto by Brian White, but he had too much time to think about what kind of finish to use against Brad Stuver and ended up with a strike that went well wide.
It's the third straight match where White botched a big chance after getting in behind, with his search for a 100th MLS goal in his career stretching into next week and beyond.
It was a quiet outing for Yohei Takaoka except for one moment: a Facundo Torres corner found the head of in-form striker Brandon Vázquez, which was destined for the back of the net until Takaoka came diving in to deny the former USMNT international a sure equalizer.
Despite a lengthy five minutes of stoppage time, Davy Arnaud's side just couldn't find a breakthrough, and Tori Penso blew for full-time after the stoppage time and some more.
Almost a month after destroying Real Salt Lake in their own backyard by a 3-0 scoreline, the Whitecaps return to winning ways and now have some breathing space at the summit of the Western Conference, taking a four-point lead thanks to a shocking 3-2 win for Minnesota United over St. Louis City.
The focus shifts to next week on Saturday, when they take on the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, with kickoff set for 6:30 pm PT / 7:30 pm MT.
