It's time for some rescheduled action: the Vancouver Whitecaps travel out East to take on the Chicago Fire!

Here’s everything you need to know heading into tomorrow’s match.

How the Chicago Fire enter this match

The Fire enter this game after ending a winless run that saw them record four draws and three losses across seven matches.

That win came away from home against Charlotte FC, with a second-half strike from Johan Gómez making the difference, while recently retired USMNT defender Tim Ream was sent off for the hosts late in the game.

Currently ranked fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference, a win would put Chicago in fourth place, which is a crucial place if a side wants home advantage in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this match

The results rollercoaster continues for the Whitecaps: they followed up a huge away win with a 3-3 draw against DC United, which felt like two points dropped, with Brian White, Bruno Caicedo, and Thomas Müller scoring for the hosts, while Lucas Bartlett's goal was helped on by Kimito Nono, who recorded a brace for the visitors.

Currently ranked first in the MLS Western Conference, a win would not only give Vancouver a six-point lead over St. Louis City SC in second place, but it would also put Vancouver one step closer to post-season qualification, while also helping Vancouver with their final attempts to catch Nashville SC for the MLS Supporters' Shield.

Head-to-head

These two sides have history, meeting each other on fifteen occasions since 2011.

The Vancouver Whitecaps currently hold the series lead, recording seven wins and four draws, while the Chicago Fire have recorded four wins.

The most recent encounter came last year at BC Place Stadium, with the Chicago Fire taking advantage of a shorthanded Vancouver side due to the international break and defeating them by a 3-1 scoreline. Hugo Cuypers and Daniel Ríos traded goals in the first half, with Philip Zinckernagel and Rominigue Kouamé scoring the decisive goals in the second half.

The most recent game in Chicago was all the way back in 2023, when a first-half goal from Brian White was the difference for the Canadian side, who grabbed a 1-0 win on the night.

Players to watch

The obvious pick for the Fire is Polish legend Robert Lewandowski. After receiving back-to-back bookings in the UEFA Nations League, the 38-year-old forward won't be available for Poland's final match of the September-October window. He's confirmed to have returned to Chicago, and the chances are high that he features in tomorrow's fixture. In fifteen games for the club, Lewandowski has recorded seven goals and two assists. Despite his age, he is still a very big threat, and the shaky Whitecaps defence needs to tighten up against one of the sport's greatest players ever.

On the other side is German legend Thomas Müller, who heads into this match on a good run of form: not only has the 37-year-old midfielder recorded goals in back-to-back games, he's also recorded two goals and two assists in his last three MLS games, growing his overall tally to ten goals and six assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. Most people know that Müller's contribution is more than just numbers. He's got elite positioning in the final third, which paired well with Robert Lewandowski during their Bayern days. With the two players set to face each other in a reunion, it will be interesting to see if Chicago's defence can contain the in-form Raumdeuter.

Availability

This section will be updated at 2:00 pm PT following the release of the MLS Availability Report.

For Chicago, André Franco and Anton Salétros were unavailable last week, while Salétros was listed as questionable, which does give him a higher chance of appearing tomorrow. Noah Allen, Chris Brady, Puso Dithejane, Robin Lod, and Anzor Mekvabishvili will miss the match due to international duty.

For Vancouver, Jeevan Badwal, Kenji Cabrera, and Belal Halbouni are set to miss out due to injury. Mihail Gherasimencov, Édier Ocampo, and Ralph Priso will miss the match due to international duty. While Andrés Cubas' status is uncertain, both Yadaly Diaby and Rayan Elloumi should be back for Vancouver, with the latter already being confirmed to return to the match squad. Cheikh Sabaly missed the club's most recent game through illness, so it's likely that he will be fit for tomorrow's match.
