It’s that time of year again when a fan digs through the Canada Trademark database and uncovers potential names and logos tied to soccer in Canada.
This time, the YYC Soccer podcast spotted the name "Supra FC" registered as a trademark with the Canadian government in July, just over a month ago.
The applicant of this trademark? Angelo Pasto, who is rumoured to be part of the new potential CPL Quebec club’s ownership group.
I think there's a very good chance the new CPL team in Quebec will be called Supra. A new trademark application for the name and the old CSL logo was approved in July. The applicant is Angelo Pasto, who is widely rumoured to be in the ownership group. ised-isde.canada.ca/cipo/tradema...

Other fans later discovered that the name had also been registered in Quebec two months ago, listed as "CF Supra Soccer Inc." in French and "Supra FC Soccer Inc." in English. The trademark’s primary activity is listed as “Professional sports club.”
If the name sounds familiar, it should: “FC Supra de Montréal” was the city’s professional club before folding in 1992, the same year the Montreal Impact were founded.
The Supra competed in the Canadian Soccer League, then the country’s top division, from its founding in 1988 until shutting down after five seasons. It’s a piece of history that many Montreal fans will instantly recognize.
That said, a trademark doesn’t guarantee the name will be used. In 2018, the Canadian Premier League registered “Port City FC,” which was widely rumoured for one of the BC clubs, but the team ultimately launched as Pacific FC. The “Port City” trademark still exists, but the name has never been used.
For now, it remains to be seen what name the new Quebec CPL club will officially take.
