Andrés Cubas has signed a contract extension with the Vancouver Whitecaps that will keep him at the club through the 2027-28 MLS season.

His new deal will be funded through Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), meaning he will no longer occupy a Designated Player spot, with the Whitecaps opting for a two DP, four U-22 roster model to begin the season. Ryan Gauld occupies one of the two available DP spots.

The Paraguayan international joined in April 2022 and has made 136 appearances since, establishing himself as one of the league's best defensive midfielders in the process.

In 2025, the 29-year-old featured in 41 appearances across all competitions, starting 37 of them, chipping in with two assists, and leading the team in tackles won in MLS play with 44 — a feat he also achieved in both 2024 and 2023.

Across all competitions since joining in 2022, Cubas has scored once and added 10 assists in those 136 outings.

"Andrés embodies everything we value in our group," club sporting director Axel Schuster said. "He is driven, relentless in his work ethic, and a true leader in our locker room, setting the standard for our younger players. On the pitch, he has been integral to our success and ranks among the very best in the league at his position. We are delighted that Andrés has committed to the club and look forward to continuing to support him and his family here in Vancouver."

The Whitecaps are back in action on Wednesday when they host Cartaginés in a crucial Champions Cup second leg, having played out a goalless draw in Costa Rica in the first match.

The club got their MLS season off to a winning start over the weekend, narrowly defeating Real Salt Lake.
