The second match of a back-to-back meeting between the Wanderers and the Hammers saw Forge win decisively and complete the sweep against the East Coast side. Here are some of the talking points from today's 4-0 match.
Halifax still struggle producing offensive opportunities
The Wanderers looked to play with much more energy and pressure in today’s match than in their previous outing, which saw them lose 3-1 to Forge. However, after the second-half onslaught from the Hammers, that energy and press all but dissipated, as the visitors went on to win by an even bigger margin.
Credit has to go to a strong Forge back line, but this performance also highlights real offensive concerns for the Wanderers, who managed just one shot on target. The Atlantic-based side needs to do a better job of creating chances and taking on opponents in the final third if they want to be considered a top side in Canadian football.
Marco Carducci left on an island
The Calgarian shot-stopper did all he could to keep his side competitive in today’s match. Carducci made five saves in total, including a penalty stop on Brian Wright early in the game. Although he will be disappointed to have conceded four goals, many of them were not his fault, as there was very little he could do to keep those efforts from crossing the line.
Tristan Borges masterclass
It was an inspirational performance from the 2024 CPL Player of the Year. The 27-year-old looked exceptional on the ball, getting into attacking positions, finding accurate passes, and showing his quality throughout, including a spectacular left-footed free kick that found the back of the net.
Borges scored again after a slick pass from Hoce Massunda, who crossed the ball into his path, allowing the Forge captain to stretch out, make contact, and guide the ball into the bottom corner.
Could Forge be the first CPL winner in this tournament?
This was a very strong and dominant performance from the Hammers.
With Toronto FC eliminated from the Voyageurs Cup just a few days prior, the door is wide open for Forge to reach the final, and no CPL team looks more menacing than them. They have come close before, but have never reached that final game. 2026 may just be the year of Forge.
Standout performers of the match
Tristian Borges: A brace. Enough said.
Hoce Massunda: Was a constant attacking threat who looked lively on the ball, securing himself an assist in the process.
Rezart Rama: Very sturdy defending. Solid as always.
Brian Wright: Played his part as a reliable number nine and secured a goal for his efforts.
Jefferson Alphonse: The one bright spot for Halifax. Won the majority of his ground duels.
