October has started, and temperatures are dropping noticeably, but the competition in the CPL is as hot as ever. Get your hot cocoa going while we check on the week of results.
The games
Only three matches this weekend, and they clocked an absolutely incredible 15 goals between them.
Saturday was set up to be a decisive day: With six points separating Cavalry and Forge, the Shield race isn't over, but the window is closing fast, and Forge needed to come out of this with a win to stand a real chance.
It looked like they'd have that opportunity all day: Inter Toronto put in a heroic effort, battering Cavalry from the start. The visitors struggled until the 83rd minute, when they clawed back a single goal from numerous attempts. A well-deserved win for Toronto in front of their home crowd, and a stumble for a Cavs team that has run very hard all season and is perhaps starting to show a bit of fatigue.
With that result, all Forge had to do was nail a win and they would close the points gap by half. Halifax at home was certainly a winnable prospect for the mighty Hammers, and at 90 minutes the score was 3-1, and it seemed done and dusted.
When the whistle blew, it was 3-3. Stoppage-time heroics from Mackenzie and Ciccarelli levelled the score, giving Vanni a scrappy one point and depriving Forge of the full three points in the end.
If you still wanted a few more goals, Sunday was a dismantling as FC Supra played to a 5-0 result against a shattered Pacific that just couldn't make anything fit together. In fact, Supra scored more goals than Pacific had shots in the entire affair. Woof.
The standings and the next games
We wind our way towards the end of the regular season. I've listed how many regular-season games each club has left.
Pacific (4 games remaining)
After being bodied by Supra, it is an away game against Forge on Wednesday and then a home game against Ottawa on Sunday. Two tough games even at the best of times.
Inter Toronto (4 games remaining)
Toronto will try to take their energy forward when they play Supra at home Wednesday and will then travel to Hamilton to play Forge away on Monday.
Halifax Wanderers (3 games remaining)
While others are playing double matches, the Wanderers have only one against Cavalry at home on Monday.
FC Supra (4 games remaining)
An away trip to Toronto on Wednesday followed by hosting Vancouver FC on Saturday.
Vancouver FC (3 games remaining)
Only one game this round, which is away in Quebec, so Nash’s lads can enjoy the plane ride in comfort. Tune in Saturday.
Atlético Ottawa (3 games remaining)
Away to the west coast to play Pacific on Sunday.
Forge FC (4 games remaining)
Forge is no doubt hoping for more results against Pacific this Wednesday at home before the derby with Toronto on Monday.
Cavalry FC (3 games remaining)
The Cavs’ only game is in Halifax on Monday, where they will no doubt be looking to get back to form.
There are a lot of games this round, as the league gets everyone to have only two games left on the calendar, and the end is in sight. Good luck!
