WHI Whitecaps 1 FT 1 PUM Pumas

Vancouver and Pumas played to a heated 1-1 draw in Leg 1 of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-finals.

As has been the case this season, the Whitecaps started strong, with Sebastian Berhalter firing a dangerous shot that was barely deflected out for a corner just two minutes in.

Pumas struggled against the hosts' press, frequently losing possession and allowing more chances than they would have liked.

They began to settle into the match around the 15-minute mark but still found it difficult to get close to Vancouver’s box.

Referee Keylo Herrera whistled for half-time after a relatively quiet final 30 minutes of the first half.

Jayden Nelson and Emmanuel Sabbi entered the pitch for Ralph Priso and Ali Ahmed at the hour mark.

Pumas got their first shot on target of the game a few minutes later, though Yohei Takaoka wasn’t tested.

In the 70th minute, following a corner, Brian White tapped in a loose ball inside the box to put the Whitecaps ahead on the night.

17 minutes later, Adalberto Carrasquilla tied things up with a fantastic volley, getting a crucial away goal to bring to Mexico next week.

Substitute Emmanuel Sabbi hit the post late in the game after a great header.

Leg 2 will be played on Wednesday, April 9, in Mexico.
