Jesper Sørensen and the Whitecaps take on an opponent they rarely face.

The Vancouver Whitecaps officially return to MLS action tomorrow evening, as they take on Eastern Conference side FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium.

Here's everything you need to know heading into tomorrow's match.

How FC Cincinnati enters this match

For the hosts, this will be their first competitive match since the end of May, when they destroyed Orlando City at TQL Stadium, grabbing a 6-2 win.

Cincinnati have been kept busy during the break, as they did face EFL Championship side Burnley FC in a friendly, taking the English side down with a 3-1 win.

Currently in seventh place with a 5-5-5 record, perhaps Pat Noonan's side should be doing better based on their squad, which is why a win is crucial to begin the second half of the MLS season.

How the Vancouver Whitecaps enter this match

The visitors have gotten some competitive action more recently than Cincinnati, as the Whitecaps took down Cavalry FC in the Canadian Championship quarterfinals, winning 4-1 at home before grabbing a 1-1 draw away from home to seal the tie.

Jesper Sørensen's side was supposed to be in action last week on Thursday against Robert Lewandowski's Chicago Fire. Still, poor air quality from the Canadian wildfires that spread into the city forced the game to be postponed to October 6.

Currently sitting at the peak in the Western Conference, the Whitecaps will now look to build a gap over the San Jose Earthquakes, who are level on points with Vancouver.

Head-to-head

Since FC Cincinnati's inception in 2019, these two sides have faced each other only three times, with Vancouver winning once in the inaugural meeting and the following two ending in draws.

The last meeting took place in 2023 at BC Place Stadium, with Luciano Acosta and Ryan Gauld trading second-half goals in a 1-1 draw.

The only time a winner has been determined between these two sides came in 2019 at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium, as after Allan Cruz opened the scoring six minutes into the game, goals from In-Beom Hwang and Felipe secured a 2-1 win for Vancouver.

Players to watch

The midfielders are gonna be important in this one, as FC Cincinnati's Evander ranks as one of the best attacking midfielders in MLS. After a couple of ridiculous seasons at the Portland Timbers, Evander joined FC Cincinnati ahead of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, and he hasn't disappointed. After an insane 22 goals and 17 assists in 43 games across all competitions last season, Evander has continued to terrorize the league, recording nine goals and six assists in 14 games, adding an assist to the tally when factoring in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Alongside Kévin Denkey, the two have formed a deadly partnership that easily ranks in the league's top five duos. If the Whitecaps want to win this game, stopping Evander will be a top priority for the defence.

A player who made an impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 25-year-old midfielder Sebastian Berhalter returns to Vancouver after a campaign which saw him grab a goal and assist against Türkiye in the group stages. For the Whitecaps, Berhalter had a spectacular first half of the season, recording seven goals and four assists in 18 games across all competitions. While Cincinnati might have the best attacking midfielder in the league, Vancouver has the best central midfielder in the league with Berhalter, as the American continues to build on his breakout 2025 season. Cincinnati will have to focus on limiting Berhalter's involvement if they want to grab three points tomorrow evening.

For Cincinnati, everyone on the roster is eligible to play, with no injuries reported by Major League Soccer.

For the Vancouver Whitecaps, Kenji Cabrera, Belal Halbouni, Ralph Priso, and Emmanuel Sabbi will remain out for the club due to injuries. Liam Mackenzie will also be unavailable due to international duty for the Canadian Men's U-20 National Team.
